Safari won't connect to internet

Safari won't connect to internet (I'm on Firefox now and glad I had it as a backup!). I am getting a message that the computer isn't connected to the internet. But it is. Firefox works. I used to use it when I had a PC, but have been using Safari since I got my Mac a year ago. I haven't upgraded to 10.6.6 yet as I just got an external hard drive to back up my system with Time Machine before doing the upgrade. My data is backed up on Carbonite so I won't lose it, but after reading so many of the discussions about the latest Snow Leopard Upgrade I thought it best to wait until I backed up the whole system, in case something goes wrong. Software update didn't notify me automatically about the 10.6.6 update so I got a little concerned. I know that is an issue for another forum, but thought the more info ya'll have, the easier it might be to help me find an answer.
Safari worked fine last night. And I can tell from my modem that I am connected to the internet. Plus I am here at Apple Discussions so it must be something with Safari. Is this when I trash a plist? If so, which one? Or do I need to do something else? Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time

Just happened again. this is so strange.
I deleted the folder in Safari because I lost the internet connection there. and in Chrome. After about 1/2 hr it restarted. Both browsers. Firefox has never not worked.
I added back a few bookmarks. Nothing unusual. the bookmark to these discussions. to my local library. and to Netflix. That is all that are bookmnarked in Safari. In chrome I bookmarked two games from the Web (Popcap) one is Bejeweled 2 and one is Bejeweled 3. Interestingly enough they have also been bookmarked in Firefox. Not sure when I did that. and I haven't gone to the games from Firefox in the last few days.
The last I was on the internet in Safari was probably an hour or so ago. Sent a few emails (I use SmartZone Communications from Comcast for my email) and then went and watched a dvd. Just come back here to check to see if I had gotten any responses about this problem or any other emails and Safari gave me the "can't connect to the internet message. Then I checked Chrome and it doesn't connect either.

deleted them from the browser bookmarks individually and nothing changed. thenremoved the safari folder to my desktop like i did yesterday (from the library) and nothing still. that is what I did this afternoon and nothing worked for about a 1/2 hour and then both Safari and Chrome came back. If it werent' for Firefox working, I know I would be blaming Comcast. I do sometimes have problems with the conncection and I have to refresh Safari to reconnect. The Tech who was here last year when the problem got really bad, talked about the signal being too strong (outside of the normal parameters but that is an ongoing thing and doesn't seem to have changed in weeks.

Okay. Both Safari and Chrome are reconnected to the Internet. Just like this afternoon. Seems to take it about an hour. I am seriously thinking of using Firefox as my default browser for now, but that really doesn't solve the problem. I guess I will do one bookmark a day in Safari and see what happens. I haven't made any other changes I am sure. And I guess if it happens again, I will follow Andy's advice about removing the bookmark plist and seeing if that is what is causing the problem. Does that make sense? I don't have to have bookmarks to get where I want, just makes life a little easier.

and if (when) it happens again, I will take this same thread up. I will keep checking to see if any one else posts a problem like this. I haven't updated to 10.6.6 yet. I was going to back up to Time Machine first. Do you think that would help solve this, or worsen it, or just confuse the issue?

and if I knew how to add a winking smiley face to my post, I would be winking back at ya!

For what its worth this message comes to you through Safari.

Thank you thank you.
and if you can help with my recurring problem, or if Bee or Andy or anyone else can help I will be so glad.

I have AGAIN Lost internet from Safari, Chrome, iTunes and I haven't checked but I'll bet I can't get to software update. I have taken the bookmark plist and put it on my desktop. But the only Bookmark I put in Safari since it restarted was for this Apple Discussion Website. Since it usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes for the connection to recur, I guess I will wait, but it sort of makes me wonder what it is. 😕

The other weird thing is that when I came back to this website, I had to log back in, though I had never logged out. But I think I had been here today through Safari, not Firefox. Don't know if that gives more information, or is just extra stuff.

This is very frustrating, but I am confident it will get solved.

Hi

While you can't connect with Safari - can you test briefly in a a New User Account , to see if the same thing happens... ?

Setup fast user switching & you don't even have to close your current login session - but it will indicate whether or not the problem is restricted to just your regular account.

If that's the same - does restarting the mac suddenly get internet working again?

You've no security software, anti-virus, anything like that ?
