ITunes could not back up the IPhone "phone name" because an error occurred.

I just tried to do a sync on my iPhone 4 to my IMac where my ITunes are actually stored. For some reason I got the error that is the subject of this post. My IMac is up-to-date, and I normally sync every Sunday to keep my IPhone as up-to-date as possible.

The only things that I have done differently this week: I installed Apple TV, I can't imagine that this makes any difference, other than I have another "Home Sharing" device in the house. Other than that, I updated my apps separately on both the IPhone and the IMac prior to syncing. The numbers waiting to be downloaded on ITunes was irritating me, but I didn't feel like syncing at the time.

Is anyone else getting this error, and if so, have you been able to resolve it, and how?

IMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6), IPhone 4 4.2.1 and Apple 2

My phone was a replacement, after a "new battery".

When I went back to the genius bar for the back up problem, I was told that if the phone was talking to the computer (syncing would work fine from the computer to the phone), then the phone was fine. I was told it must be a computer (itunes) issue.

Went home and tried backing up my phone to a BRAND NEW iMac, and had the same issue. Then I tried backing up to my macbook, and again had the same issue.

Went back to the Genuis bar and they tried doing some tests, but they cannot do backups at the store as the computers don't allow it for privacy reasons.

I was given a replacement phone (because it was within 90 days of the repalcement for a new battery), and now all is fine again.

I just need it to last until I can get an unlocked next generation iphone, which should arrive within weeks!

Well, it turned out that I had a corrupt backup file. I ended up calling Apple support, they were stumped as to my not getting an error message, and it took us about an hour to actually figure out where the problem truly fell. We were able to go into my iTunes library and delete the back-up folder, I wished I had had the opportunity to save the steps we took to resolve the issue, but it just went so fast!

Happily syncing again!

Thanks to those who offered assistance!

I just had this same problem start a week or two ago and I've done everything in this thread with zero success. It DOES sync all of the data but it WON'T back up.

I've restarted everything, verified the disk, repaired the permissins, deleted all of the music, pix and videos, hard reset, and I've even deleted ALL of the back up files per the instructions above and I keep getting this un-numbered error.

in your HomeFolder under:

  • Mac

    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

  • Win
    • ~\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    • or
    • ~\AppData\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

I have an old powerbook g4 running 10.5.8 and a 4S on 601.

I'm stuck on this ios until I get a new Mac, or else I won't be able to sync. I can't recall but if I restore I think it will force me to upgrade to 704 and with that I'll lose the ability to sync.....at least that works for now.

I just want to be able to get a newer Mac and iphone soon and not have to enter everything by hand.
