Is there any way to mute email / text alerts during set periods (sleep?)

Apps don't have access to the iphone core functions.

Before you go ot bed, turn the e-mail notification off, then when you get up turn them back on again.

Find a different place to charge your phone. Keeping it near your head while sleeping at night isn't a great idea anyways.

You can always turn off the vibrate function and put it on mute.
Or simply leave it in another room.

Unfortunately the only way to get the functionality you want would be for Apple to offer that feature in the iOS. The API's required to control that functionality are not available to developers.

Set your email to fetch manually and buy the app called pushmail. It allows you to mute notifications for whatever times you like.
