No play controls in Youtube with Safari

I am using the latest version of all apple software on my Imac. I tried to view a Youtube video and don't see the typical play button. Just a black box where the video appears. If I switch to Firefox, no problems.

Any ideas?

Did you solve this? Got a me-too here.

Exactly as you described: a plain black area with no play controls. Note:

YouTube works as expected in Firefox
YouTube videos work as expected in Safari when seen embedded on other sites
Reinstalled FlashPlayer, problem persists
Tried emptying cache, deleting YouTube cookies and restarting machine
Same occurs when using Safari in a fresh user account on the same machine

Much appreciated if anyone has any ideas...

You can add me to this growing list. I'm experiencing identical symptoms (Firefox success and all). So far, nothing I've tried has been successful. This includes:

Deleting all extensions
Resetting Safari (clearing cache, deleting cookies... etc.)
Restarting my machine
Un/ reinstalling Flash
Repairing permissions via Disk Utility
Installing the previous version of Safari
Reinstalling V 5.0.3.
Systematically moving/ deleting Safari's .plist files

Can't figure it out.

Add me to the list!!

Actually I've had this YT (no player controls) problem since last week. Pissn' me off. I had some luck with watching HTML5 YT videos but obviously there are many videos not HTML5 ready. I turned off developer menu and tried switching to another options besides Safari in the dev menu but no luck.

It's like Apple is doing some underhanded workings to force us to HTML5 videos or something.

I have had the same problem, for about a week. Although I have no better idea than anyone else why it suddenly has stopped working correctly, I did find a work-around (of sorts).

In Safari/Preferences, under the Extensions tab, I clicked the "Get Extensions" button, which brought up a long list of possible extensions for Safari. About half-way down I found the extension "A Cleaner YouTube". I installed it, then back with the Safari/Preferences window ensured that this extension was enabled. Also ensured that the master switch was ON, and then closed the Preferences window. I opened up YouTube anew, and was immediately able to watch videos.

Frankly, I don't have a clue why it doesn't work the old way, and yet does with this extension, but at least it does now work.

Darn, I guess that I spoke too soon.

I now find that what I can see are those which are either my own uploads or previously designated favorites, which have a URL that starts with "http://www.youtube.com/user/......", followed by YouTube userid, followed by the discrete ID of the video. If the URL starts with "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=", followed by the discrete ID of the video, it does NOT work.

So, a URL like
http://www.youtube.com/user/.. {my userid}.../j 4QN6J4xQ
works (after I sign into the account), but
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4QN6J4xQ {the same video}
does not work.

Is it possible that YouTube changed the coding for the videos, so that Safari and/or Flashplayer cannot negotiate those URLs?

Pete
