No play controls in Youtube with Safari

I am using the latest version of all apple software on my Imac. I tried to view a Youtube video and don't see the typical play button. Just a black box where the video appears. If I switch to Firefox, no problems.

Any ideas?

Youtube's Server Side Problems:
I've found that for any video that doesn't play, go to the channel (by clicking on the poster's name) and it will play from there. This has worked for me 100% in about 20 test cases.

A Clue why Youtube is broken on Safari 64 bit:
Two out of the three of my machines running OS X 10.6.6 and Safari Version 5.0.3 (6533.19.4) work with Youtube.

The one that doesn't work has these properties.
The flash link below works in both modes, 32 and 64 bit.

32 bit mode works, 64 bit mode doesn't work for this:

In the Activity Window, I see this difference - (... means three lines more of stuff)

(prefixed by http://)
32 bit - works. v8.lscache2.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?sparams=id%2Cexpire...
64 bit - broken. v8.lscache2.c.youtube.com/generate_204?sparams=id%2Cexpire...

Hmmm.. videoplayback vs. generate_204

Wikipedia describes html error 204 as:
204 No Content - The server successfully processed the request, but is not returning any content

So, it's server side sending a blank. But why?

Add me to the list please.

I've been having the same "black box" problem since around feb 17 as well. Youtube videos play fine in the user's channel. I have the same exact problem with chrome though. Used 32 bit mode but the top of the video follows the top of the window as i scroll down and its a bit annoying. Would like a 64 bit solution rather than having to use 32 bit mode.

Hi,

Shot in the dark, here...

I was wondering if anyone here uses VirusBarrier X5 by any chance? My parents have been experiencing this issue for a little while, and it seems to correspond to the time their VB was updated on 02/17?

I tried enabling the extension "a cleaner YouTube", but as another poster mentioned, this did not solve the problem. I would like to avoid reverting them to 32bit...seems unnatural 🙂

Personally, I don't have this issue - I'm running Safari in 64 bit mode, VirusBarrier X6 and YouTube with Flash, not HTML5 - and see all video player controls just fine.

I don't really see why the 2 things would be related...but I have had some issues in the past when VB updated, namely with the iTunes Store.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Best regards,

Straw

Seems to be on the Youtube side. Changing the User Agent worked for me without having to revert to 32 bit mode.

First, unhide the Develop menu, then change the User Agent to something other than Safari 5.0.3--MAC. I set mine to Safari 5.0.3--Windows and the videos play correctly.

To unhide the Develop Menu:
Preferences/Advanced/Check the Box to Show Develop Menu in the Menu Bar

Once that's done, select Develop/User Agent and make selection
