How to download bigger apps without Wifi

When I download apps my Iphone 4 tells me I need to activate Wifi to download it. Is there an option somewhere to tell the phone to always use 3G instead so i don't have to activate Wifi evertime I want to download? I think this only applies to bigger apps, last one i tried was 30mb+.

Let my clear this up for everyone. I just went from droid to iPhone 5 and have Verizon. On droid a message would pop up saying please connect to wifi before downloading large apps however the app would still download but only if on 4g LTE. Now on IPhone and still 4g LTE I can't download large apps. This is apple and only apple that prohibits this. Also for those of you that have never owned a droid I highly recommend it because as a phone droid is way better. My issue with droids were some apps I really want to use affected my data signal and iphone does not have these issues. If u don't plan on using as many apps droid is light years ahead of iPhone in that area. The Samsung commercial says it best trust me go check one out. I love my iphone 5 just still getting use not hAving as many options as I did on the droid.

This is really ridiculous and I hope Apple with remove this stupid limit in the next update or at least add an option to be removed by user from settings.

I Am not using wifi anymore at home, I am using my unlimited LTE internet plan with iPhone 5, even with my laptop.

So I will never be able to sownload Apps at home.

They can at least add the option to settings menu and the user will decide to pay for 50 MB or not..!!!!

I am on the same situation. I guess this simply means LTE users are not allowed to download apps more than 50mb :)

Sometimes people who think they are too smart to decide what's good for others is forgetting that user should still decide what they want and therefore should be given an option to do so.

Hope thats someone from apple start reviewing the limitations they are imposing because some are outdated already.

Thanks

This isn't even a device restriction, it must be an iOS restriction. Simply tether your iPad (or other tablet) to your iPhone (or someone else's phone!) or vice versa and you can get round the limit. Obviously this requires having an extra device so isn't a full solution.

I do however also find this restriction rediculous, it should be a user configurable setting. Add your two cents:

True, JyraSapphire 🙂

I'm using the personal hotspot on my 5S to post this from my Mac because my home plan is maxed out for this month and slowed to 64Kbps. There is one situation that I cannot find a way around:

iPhones purchased after Sep 2013 can dowload Pages, Numbers, etc. from the App store for free. But they are over 100MB so you need wifi or another device to tether to and I get to town about twice a year to even consider a cafe with wifi lol. So, using the iPhone personal hotspot, I go to the App Store from iTunes on my Mac and try to download Pages; it's not free doing it this way!!! ($10.49 for me). 😟 For everything else, personal hotspot is something I can live with until the home plan resets.
