My iphone receives email ok but when I try to send it displays an message: username or password incorrect
I have deleted my account and reinut the details (which are correct) and were authenticated ok but the problem still persists!

For the last couple of years I have tried to get my iPod touch to send company email and it never worked (smtp issue). I never really bothered too much with figuring it out because I have a BlackBerry for email and the touch is a toy. Well, I am getting an iPhone 4 (Verizon model) delivered on Tuesday and am going to have to iron out the smtp issue. I have collected all the settings and transferred them to the touch but smtp always fails. My company uses Mailsite by Rockliffe for webmail. Ideally, I would like to use pop configuration as I am close to getting the settings correct, currently I can receive email but cannot send. Any ideas?

Just got my Verizon iPhone4 today. I've been receiving emails all day (Frontier Comm. is my ISP) but when the iPhone tries to verify the incoming connection, that fails. Then I get a new email, huh? So incoming is not an issue, currently. Outgoing is another matter. It doesn't work. I keep getting the error that the server has rejected the submission because "The recipient name@isp.net was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying." The message goes to my Outbox for later correction. Very annoying - all setting have been verified and repeatedly entered correctly. Something's amiss in iOS 4.2's Mail. Help!

Not sure if this is your case but for me it took a little research and a call to our IT department. My IT guys pointed out that they block port 25 (smtp) so that explains why I could not send email, but it doesn't explain why my BlackBerry could on port 25. I noticed I was also trying to send via WiFi which also was a problem (my BlackBerry did not have WiFi so I never noticed this) but my ISP Cox cable blocks port 25. I found out that if use the 3G to send work email it works fine. It appears (and don't hold me to this as I am still waiting for confirmation) since my company has business with Verizon and if I send smtp mail over port 25 Verizon is allowed to circumvent the use of port 25 traffic. Pretty annoying if you need to send large files and are limited to 3G when a more reliable 30MB cable internet connection over WiFi is available but that is my workaround.

I believe my problems have come to an end. I am now using Microsoft Exchange as my Mail client. I set up a new account (delete old account first) select Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > select Microsoft Exchange and enter the info called for under the Exchange screen. After it syncs, turn on Mail, Contacts and Calendars. Done! I can now send emails from my iPhone via wireless connection and 3G.

I Know this post is super old, but I searched and found it when I started having the same problem today. I have a 5S running iOS 9.2. I was receiving mail fine, but kept getting the username/ password incorrect message when trying to send. Only one of my accounts was having the issue. I went to settings-mail, contacts and calendars- clicked on the problem email acct, clicked on the account name (email address) scrolled down to the bottom with the Outgoing Server Settings, clicked on SMPT, then clicked on the one listed as Primary. That page brought up more login credentials. The password was filled in but I deleted it and rewrote it... It verified and bam! Mail sent! Thank you for this! I never would have known about the second set of login credentials if you followed the outgoing settings. THANK YOU FOR SAVING THE DAY JEANNIE777!!!
