macbook pro hooking up to HDTV

Hi all

what would be the best way to hook up my macbook pro 10.6.6 to a HDTV in order to edit and colour grade/correct in final cut pro 7.

MXO is marginally better than a computer monitor, and a far cry from a production monitor.

The MXO is neither a computer monitor nor a broadcast monitor. It is a hardware box that connects to your computer via DVI, and it sends a video signal, not a computer signal, to a computer monitor or broadcast monitor. It has DVI out, Component, Composite, S-Video and SDI outputs.

The MXO/Computer monitor option is a BUDGET option for viewing your video footage...allowing you to use your existing computer monitor to view your footage. But, you have said this and acknowledge this. Just don't confuse people by saying that it isn't a computer nor broadcast monitor. OF course it isn't. It's an output box. But then you say:

"But not good enough for broadcast (seen many rejected based on an MXO) nor film."

What? You have seen projects rejected because they used the MXO? The red wasn't AS red as it could have been? Slightly off because they saw it on a computer monitor? Blue not the exact right shade of blue? What? The colors might not be as good as if on a broadcast monitor, not as rich or as true...but color correcting is an art and done by eye. If you send something that is slightly different than someone with a high end setup would have done...slightly off...it wouldn't be rejected.

So, if they had a KONA or DECKLINK they would have passed QC? Why? Do they show you video levels? No, they and a broadcast monitor show you the image quality...what the colors look like. Most likely the shows were rejected because the editor didn't know how to online a show, know how to read video scopes...much less USE video scopes. I have used the MXO with my ACD for one broadcast show (onlining on the road, with my Powerbook), and it passed QC just fine. And I have used it with my broadcast monitor, and it was fine.

It wasn't the MXO...it was the user. The box will give you accurate images on a broadcast display. And it gets you VERY close on good computer displays. Do I recommend the MXO/Computer monitor for broadcast work? No...I recommend it for those who can't afford a broadcast monitor. But will you FAIL QC because you use it? No. Other factors cause failure of QC.

There is no way to connect a Matrox MXO to the MBP 6,2 since it requires an expresscard slot (or PCIe or Thunderbolt).

This particular MBP model has neither an Expresscard slot nor USB3 nor Thunderbolt, in that respect it is a really ackward model.

The latest Video breakout-boxes use Thunderbolt. The only possibilty for you would be an "AJA IO HD Firewire Breakoutbox" which uses FW800 for input, but it is very expensive.

EDIT:

The MXO is out of production. It was possible to connect it via DVI. The MXO2 available now only connects as mentioned above. So no dice anymore.
