Question on Light Table behavior

I am wondering if it just me and a couple of others who are seeing pixelated images in a Light Table in 3.1.1?

Situation:

With Aperture 3.1.1 set to all defaults in Preferences, I create a new light table (either empty or with pre-selected images) and then drag images to the light table.

The images are small on the table. They appear to be lower quality than the images in the filmstrip to begin with. Resizing the images exagerates the problem and reveals unclear and/or pixelation.

I have done a clean install of Aperture 3 and updated to 3.0.3 and the issue does not exist. Light Table images are fine whether resized or not.

*What I have tried so far:*

1 - Clean install of OS X 10.6 and updated with 10.6.6 combo installer (repaired disk permissions once installed), then install Aperture 3 and updated to 3.1.1 (repaired disk permissions once completed). Import new images from Nikon D80 (both RAW and JPEG) and tested light table. Same issue. Then imported new .cr2 files from a friend's Canon, which all had the same issue.

2 - Copy APTS lesson files and library to drive > open with Aperture 3.1.1 (upgrade library when prompted). The existing images in that library behave correctly in Light Table, but newly imported images into that library display the image degradation / pixelation in light table.

3 - In all cases, I have tried to delete / generate Previews as well as Thumbnails. None of these have sorted the issue.

Note - it almost appears to me that the images used on the light table are actually small thumbnails that are low quality on the light table and any subsequent resizing pixelates the image.

Note #2 - the strange thing in all cases is that using the loupe tool and panning over the images in the light table shows high-quality image.

I am trying to determine if it is my machine (or procedure) specifically, or if there are others experiencing this in large numbers.

I have 8 GB RAM and the nVidia 8800 GT upgrade card in my machine. Whether just Aperture 3.1.1 is installed or with all my normal software, no difference in Light Table behavior.

Looking for comments as to whether users have no issues like this or any who do.

I have already sent a report to Apple.

I'm having the same problem running the latest Aperture with 10.6.8 on a 2.8 GHz Macbook Pro. Very pixelated images on the light table. Printing from the Light Table results in an incredibly poor image. Resolution and color are way off when compared to printing a single image straight out of Aperture. Looks like the only way to get a reasonable print with multiple images on a page is via Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign.

Hopefully someone/Apple figures out what the problem is.

Problem still exists on OS X 10.7.1 and AP 3.1.3 on my machine.

Have tested with both the supported nVidia 8800 GT and then with the unsupported ATI HD 5770 graphics card in my Mac Pro (early 2008) system. Light table image quality was bad in both cases easily identified by looking at the filmstrip thumbnail quality and then comparing the thumbnail in the light table at same size (which is quite bad).

I run all Apple hardware with the exception of a Logitech LX8 (USB) mouse and a Wacom Intous3 tablet.

Tests were run without the Wacom tablet connected and without Wacom drivers installed on a clean install of OS X Lion (installed using a 10.7.1 USB flash drive). Updates to iTunes and Remote Desktop were applied, permissions repaired via Disk Utility booting from the same 10.7.1 USB flash drive.

Aperture 3 was installed and then I immediately installed the AP 3.1.3 update. Repaired permissions again (which had to repair 3 PluginManager Framework files with group issues that were set to '80' and were supposed to be '0').

IMHO - definitely an AP 3.1.x issue. 😟

I will try filing a bug report via the developers avenue to see if it helps. ???

As a Windows power-user at work, these troubleshooting efforts are becoming too familiar on my Mac at home. 😝

I get the same problem on a brand new iMac fully updated, 21.5inch with 12Gb RAM, 2.8Ghz i7 &

AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB graphics card

Just to add weight to getting this problem resolved, I too suffer from eaxctly the same issues as described in this and several other posts regarding trhe resolution of images in Aperture (3.2.1) light table.

I'm having the same issue. Aperture 3.2.2. OS X 10.7.3.

I just filed a radar (bug report) with apple. It's Bug ID# 10892128.

Hopefully they will get the issue resolved.

Finally!

Color me happy. The light table images are now the same as the thumbnails and previews (clean and clear at all sizes).

This has been fixed in AP 3.3 and I can now use the light table function as a nice layout options workspace. 😉

I'll mark as solved on my post, but Apple did the work (obviously). 😎
