Setting up an ENVIRONMENT for the Roland Phantom X

Hi. I am currently running Logic 8.

I have my computer hooked up via USB to the Roland Fantom-XR sound module.

I can get the computer to recognize the Fantom as a GM device. I can see the blinking lights go off on the Fantom when I press my controller, But I hear no audio coming out of my speakers and the speakers are playing other Logic events in the Arrange window just fine.

The question I guess I have is WHERE is the environment supposed to be set up in this scenario? Has anyone experience this problem?

Right now the unit is acting as a controller only. Midi and audio are not the same.
In order to hear and record its audio, you need to connect from the audio out on the Roland to your interface... when you get it.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear - while recording line-in, definitely is a solution, I want the SOFTWARE instruments in the Logic session to play patches that are STORED on the Fantom

You are confused. Software instruments can not "play" sounds that are on an external synth (unless you sample the sounds and play them back with the EXS 24). To play sounds from your fantom, you need to use and "external instrument" plugin in a software instrument track. You plug the audio outs from the fantom into your interface line ins. Otherwise no sounds from the fantom will come into logic.

You could build a simple environment as well as using IAC to send midi to the phantom and record the audio out which is what I think zipper is trying to get at. I can't remember exactly how to do that since Im not in front of my templates but this tutorial may help you around the environment:
