There are adaptors for converting digital audio to analog (the red and white connectors) which are not terribly expensive. But converting the digital video to analog (the yellow connector) would require a fairly expensive video digital to analog converter that would probably cost you a good fraction of the price of a new TV with a HDMI input.

Such converters would need to be HDCP compliant and if your TV is not widescreen they would also need to incorporate a scaler. I know of no such device that incorporates both technologies and posting details of devices that can circumvent copy protection (HDCP) are not permitted under the terms of use for these communities.

my tv is a widescreen HDTV. it has a DVI-D port and RCA red and white audio inputs. i can purchase a HDMI to DVI-D cable. the only issue that i have to sort out is the audio. so, what converter do i need to convert from digital audio to analog?

You'd need a DAC (digital to Analogue Converter) with optical input for audio, I don't use them so can't recommend one but you'll find plenty if you use google.

DVI is not officially supported by the Apple TV but works for many but not all, some are unable to get full resolution. You will however need to check that your TV is HDCP compliant over DVI if you want to watch copy protected content from iTunes and netflix.
