Sony PD150 PAL camera makes 60 min tape just 41 min and choppy video

Hi all.
I hired a PD150 for a shoot at the weekend (as a 2nd cam).
I handed the camera to my assistant who loaded the mini dv tape into it.
At the end of the day I reviewed the footage using my own camera and noticed that every minute or two the image becomes choppy, slows down for a moment and there are occasional digital artefacts.
My assistant tell me that although we used brand new 60min tapes, when the tapes were put in the PD150 it showed 41 minutes remaining. These were brand new sealed tapes (I never reuse tapes).
So, does anyone have any clues as to what caused the problem with the recording?
I used tapes from the same batch in my Canon XL2 and have no problems, so I can rule out a bad batch of tapes.
I think a clue is that a 60min tapes shows up as 41min.
For a moment I thought perhaps the PD150 might have been set to NTSC. I am not familiar with this camera, but have done some research and don't see that the PD150 Pal version is switchable to NTSC.
When playing the PD150 tapes in my XL2 I get a silent very choppy playback. In my domestuc Panasonic I get good audio and occasional choppyness (as described).
The PD150 is back with the hire company now (a two hour drive away).
Any advice over what caused this and how to fix it would be appreciated.

You are playing it back as DVCAM. It should be std DV.

I've always gone with Canon and Panasonic cameras but only had an option to hire a Sony at the weekend. I have to say I was ignorant of the DVCam 'format'.
So it seems I have to lay my hands on a Sony camera to capture the footage.

Just out of interest... Could I copy the DVCAM footage from a Sony to a miniDV in the Canon? (So in the future, if I want to use the footage I don't need to find a Sony?)

Regards...

Hey Juzcoping - I've rented that PD150 before !!
"R**ket Rentals" - I betcha.
It cr@ps out at any sign of rain. You also will have only one channel of audio - left only from memory. The pictures flicker and jump like you've put a strobe on in post. Absolute mongel of a thing.
Nothing you can do about it - trim out as best you can.
I had the thing for three days, as a b cam. Well, what a waste - time and money = they should hiff that thing into the drink, where it belongs.

The PD150 does shoot regular miniDV. You need to go into the menu settings and switch from DVcam to miniDV. The PD150 was replaced by the PD170 over a 1.5 years ago. The PD170 is a solid camera (I have one myself and usually shoot in miniDV mode).

In the future, I would recommend at least skimming through the manual of any camera you have not had direct experience with or used in a while - cuts down on a multitude of problems.
