Outgoing mail hangs

My mail has been working just fine for years. I have 4 account, 3 POP and 1 IMAP (AOL). Now when I try to send something, it just hangs, with the little gear wheel icon spinning by the "Sending" section. Eventually it asks to try with a different server, but no server works.

I pulled up the connection doctor. The 4 incoming ports get the little green light almost immediately. The outgoing ones rake awhile, although after about a minute the AOL gets a green light, and the detail section shows dialog (EHLO etc). The other ones eventually get some kind of message although they get a red light.

The fact that it's all 4 having problems at the same time makes me think it isn't a problem with the server end. I've cleaned out the queued messages in the outbox, and created new test messages, but they always hang. I'm thinking there is some bit set wrong in the mail.app that is getting it confused. I've rebooted and that hasn't changed anything.

What to do!?

I went through the above scenarios trying to get my mail to receive and send. I also spent $49 on Apple phone tech over a year ago to get my mail unclogged. Took two techs and about two hours to fix. But for about the fourth time my mail has stopped responding and I narrowed it down to one culprit (as some of you did), it was trying to send a larg picture file that was over the limit. I edit the file by removing some of the photos and it sends fine. But... the original ends up in "Drafts." There, for some reason, it prevents anything else from working in mail. Also, the offending email duplicates itself as the Recovered folder keeps recovering it, over and over again! I had as many as 30 copies of it. And it wouldn't go into my trash can.

After going to Connection Doctor and finding that all was well, I remembered that I once deleted my AOL account and reset it. I tried this yesterday and all went back to normal. Now I don't expect everyone to be able to reach nirvana with this fix, because Mail is Apple's rotten apple, but it might help someone.

The same type thing happened to me and this is how I fixed it.

My Mail first hung up after I tried to send an email attachment that was too large. Once the email was rejected by the server I deleted the message and then the inbox started to act all Windows Surface like... (nerd joke).

Anyway's,

-Go to Preferences in Mail.

-Select the problem account

-Click the "Mail Box Behaviors" tab

-Unselect "Store on the server" from Drafts, Sent, Junk, and Trash

-Restart Mail and... Boom-goes-the-Dynamite.

You can re-enable these features once mail is re-opened if you wish to do so.

I think that my email was stuck in limbo between my Mac and the server and needed Leonardo Dicaprio to shoot it before it could come back to its working state in reality...(another nerd joke).

Hope this helps you all as well,

Robby

Thanks, will let you know if this works. All other accounts work fine for some reason, even those on same server....

Okay, so I just changed my Outgoing Mail Server, and so far--knock on wood--it seems my particular problem is fixed.

I'm on a MacPro using 10.9.2 and Mac Mail. Since that upgrade (I installed it on a new SSD I added a few weeks ago) email has been problematic. Emails with no attachments seem to go okay, but emails with attachments NO MATTER HOW SMALL are all hanging up. The progress bar stops just a wee bit before the end, the beach ball starts to spin and I have to crash the entire machine.

I have four email accounts set up: iCloud, an Exchange account and two POP accounts. I had been sending all outgoing mail out via my ISP (a POP account), but today I changed the outgoing account to another POP account, and so far attachments have been working fine.

Thank goodness. This had been going on too long and eating up so much time that could have been productive.
