Getting thrown out of NY Times app repeatedly

Starting yesterday every single time I open NY Times app on ipad i get thrown out immediately -- I see the news page just briefly and then I'm out. Sometimes it takes me straight to the spinning circle over the Apple logo, as if ipad were shutting down, but then it returns to the normal ipad start up screen.

I first started having problems with news stories and photos refusing to update, so I logged out and then signed back in. I think that's when my "getting thrown out as soon as I open" problem started.

I deleted app and reinstalled it but have the same problem. I've also done a soft reset of ipad twice (holding on button and home button down simultaneously). Nothing works. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried resets using both home and power buttons repeatedly, holding until I see apple logo, then releasing, but it has not solved the problem. I just reset all ipad settings -- still the same problem, I get thrown out the second the app opens.

The NY Times app has been plagued with huge problems from the beginning, but I thought the worst was over after numerous updates. I guess I was wrong. I've emailed the NY Times ipad support but my past experience with them has been awful. If they respond, it is with electronic form letters. Its almost as though they hate being forced to deal with digital media in the first place.

Hi,

If you have any other news related apps on your iPad, try syncing your iPad with your computer without syncing any other news associated apps. Just deselect the boxes adjacent to those apps then click: "Sync" bottom right side of the iTunes window. Restart the iPad.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.

Tap Settings then tap the NYTimes app icon. If it doesn't crash, then it's one of your news apps may be causing an incompatiblity issue.

Sync the news related apps one at time time. You may be able to find the culprit.

Definitely some issues with that app. http://www.tuaw.com/2010/11/03/new-york-times-ipad-app-gets-bug-fix-but-still-so mewhat-flaky/

Thanks for the reply Carolyn. When I tap "Settings," there is no icon for NY Times app listed under "Apps" in left hand column. Am I supposed to see an icon there?

In any event, last night, after doing a reset of all settings, I deleted app from ipad as well as my desktop, then re-downloaded the app from App Store. I then logged back in to NY Times and now it seems to work, although I'm noticing a lot of the photos don't seem to be downloading.

Also, for some reason, after doing a new install of this app, initially you only see "Top News" in the list of "Sections." After a considerable delay, the full list of Sections eventually appears. This is yet another annoying feature of this app -- they give you no indication of what is going on behind the scenes and the user is left to assume that the app is not working properly. Apparently there is some built-in delay between the log in and the NY Times server giving you full access to all sections.

I never have any trouble with WSJ or Wash Post apps. With NY Times, it's always something. And they seem to show no interest whatsoever in responding to users with technical issues.
