CRASHED HARD DISK - NEED RECOVERY

Hi,
Hopefully i am in the right discussion forum. The hard disk crashed on my MacBookPro.Took it to an authorized mac service outfit. Nothing could be done. Need to send the drive to one of the best companies in the data retrieval business. My problem is that I do not find objective information or comparisons between the operators in this area to be able to make an assessment of their capabilities and track. Hopefully somebody could advice.

[DriveSavers|http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com> has been in business longer than most and is highly reputable. You don't find objective comparisons between data recovery firms because no one with half a brain ever needs data recovery services more than once, and because a drive that really needs the attention of a data recovery firm can't be submitted to more than one firm in succession to make a side-by-side, apples-to-apples comparison of their recovery success and their costs. The drive must be dismantled to recover the data, so in effect it no longer exists after the first recovery expert has worked on it.

Warning: Data recovery from a drive that is beyond the reach of DR software that any user can buy and use is extremely expensive.

Your profile indicates you have a Time Capsule why don't you simply restore from your Time Machine backups? In addition to eww's advice I would also recommend using a redundant backup process. In other words at a minimum use Time Machine and also get another external HD and use it as a Bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

Thank you Roger for being attentive. Unfortunately this is another machine than the one I have mentioned in my profile. On that one I work with double TC's. On this one no Time Capsule, dead HD, no backups. Yes a high level of stupidity, but for valid reasons, however outside this forum.

Thank you eww for your DriveSavers hint. I'll get back to you on that one a bit later. I have used Norman Ibas (www.ibas.com) from Norway in the past, but results have not always been the best.

Sorry to hear that. In thise case data recovery software should be the first alternative as long as the crashed hard drive can be recognized. If software failed to help, then send it for special services. Here are a few DR software examples:

Thanks JA,
I landed at Totalrecall after extensive research. The project with them worked very well. It was possible to follow the process over the webb. The drive was with them for about three weeks, but I was in no rush so it was ok. I got the data recovered that I had pre-defined, so I give them high marks. My case was fairly easy I suspect. No fire, no water and probably just a mechanical failure, but anyway, I am satisfied.
