I had the same issue (9/15/2017 itunes for windows 12.7.0.166).

The steps saying switch to the Tones tab and import your tone back into itunes can be skipped.

Connect your device.

Under your device in itunes go to Tones

In Windows Explorer drag and drop your m4r onto the itunes grid

It will say Link, but this copies the tone to your phone

Then you can follow the steps again to select your tone on the device.

I have the exact same problem. I contacted apple support (both iTunes and iPhone) and neither one was of any help at all! I want to be able to create my own ringtones using an app from the app store on iTunes and since I don't have the ringtones tab, I'm unable to do so.

I have a ringtones tab in my library, but not in iTunes when I select my iPhone under "devices."

I hope someone can help cause' the ringtones on the phone are beyond lame (I miss my BB Storm's ability for this!)

Hi Everyone,

I had this same problem with my new Verizon iPhone 4. What was funny, is that my iPod 4G did have the ringtone tab, but my iPhone did not. However, I solved it by manually adding a ringtone to iTunes, and once the ringtone was in my library, the Ringtone option showed up! I also noticed today, that I have no Podcast option for the iPhone either (but it is there for the iPod Touch), but I imagine that once I actually sync a podcast, I will get the option. Try adding a ringtone to your iTunes library (it is an AAC audio file that is no more than 30 secs long, that has a file extension of m4r as opposed to m4a). Good luck!

Rich,

Thanks for the help! However, I'm still stuck. I didn't have any ringtones on my computer except for mp3 and midi files so I bought a m4r file from the iTunes store. It is now shown in my "purchased" area on iTunes, but doesn't show up in the ringtone tab in my library and I don't know how to move it there. Can you help?

Thanks!

I GOT IT. I have an iPhone 4 with Verizon. The problem I had is that the Ringtone TAB was not showing up when I clicked the device in iTunes. No matter how many different ways I MADE a ringtone, I still could see the tab or sync ringtones. I've been looking all morning on these forums.

I gave up, made one stupid ringtone in Garage Band (as I had seen suggested) even though this is the most bass-ackwards, time consuming way to make a ringtone and, sure enough, after I "imported Ringtone to iTunes" from GarageBand, the TAB showed up when I clicked on my device.

It's like Apple was punishing me for not making a ringtone with their terrible program.

There is a really useful ringtone maker in the App Store simply called Rmaker. Its free and you can find it just by searching for Ringtone Maker. With it you can make a song you have in your iPhone into a 30 second ringtone, but you have to import it through the Apps tab. It has a good tutorial on how to do it, and its really pretty simple.

if taylorr313's answer didn't help... this is how i did it because taylorr313's didn't work for me:

1. get the app RMAKER and follow their steps

2. go onto their help video and watch that however if when you click on your iphone and up the top their is no ringtones or tones

3. click on edit at the top of the screen

4. click on prefrences and select tones/ ringtones

5. click on file at the top of the screen

6. click add file

7. scroll along the side until you see desktop (or where everyou saved it)

8. click open

9. if it isn't in the tab at the side it should be in tones

this worked for me and if it doesn't for u i'm sorry... i'm only trying to help 🙂 good luck !!!!!!!!!!

Sorry folks, but none of the tricks listed so far have worked. I've created the m4r files multiple times using every suggested method known to mankind. Two things;

1) I don't have an option to add "Ringtones" even if iTunes does recognize the file, and

2) A folder called "Tones" is created when I cdouble-click on the new m4r files but there is nothing in it.

Interesting, huh?
