Verizon iphone 4.... trying to add custom ringtones to phone...

Just received my New Iphone, yay!! Having some difficulties though adding ringtones and assigning them to my contacts. It will only allow me to add 1 custom ringtone so when I go to contacts it lists that 1 ringtone and the other standard tones.. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help..

Not sure. I've only seen a few iTunes screens other than mine and I don't have the tab order memorized. Knowing iTunes, it could change depending on individual setup. It's worth a shot in any case.

I totally agree, I am not sure what to recommend anymore, it seems very frustrating and I know in the same boat, I would feel the same way. People just want their phone to work the way it was designed and not jump through hoops. However this is clearly an iTunes issue, not a phone issue so that at least is good.

I'm going nuts with this deal, myself! Of all the things an iPhone should conceivably do, use iTunes as ringtones is one of the most viable User uploaded file For Pete's sake, every Blackberry I ever owned did it with ease, without even using the Desktop Manager!

But I digress... I have tried each of the options mentioned in this thread. I was successful in getting all eight (8) of the ringtones I created with the Ringtone Creator app into the Ringtone folder in iTunes; however, when I go to sync, only four (4) of them sync to the device. I have tried checking different ones to see if perhaps it's a copyright issue or maybe an issue of only four custom ringtones being accepted at one time--no dice. Nothing changes. It's all or nothing. It's either those four songs, or I get bupkiss--nothing at all.

I've tried the alternate method, but in truth I have not figured out where it is I am supposed to change from .m4a to .m4r. The only place I see the name listed does not allow alteration of the name. Any suggestions here?

As much as it pained me to do so, I broke down and paid for several ringtones just so I could have the familiar tones I have had for certain people for many years now. (Old habits die hard.) The only issue (aside from the obvious principle of $), is that someone ELSE has chosen the sound bytes' stop and start points, and in most cases, the choices are not the ones I would make. (The chunks of the songs they used are not the chunks I would use.)

I would be deeply grateful to anyone who would be willing to help out here. I have read this thread from start to finish, and I have followed all of the advice I have been able to take away. Unfortunately, I am left with only four ringtones. I would love to have my menu of ringtones back as I did with my BB Storm 2.

I have had Verizon's iPhone 4 since Saturday evening, and other than this littler quirk, I'm loving it. Thanks in advance for any bright (and patient) mind willing to help.

Does reading this entire thread from start to finish and following all the advice provided include deselecting Sync Ringtones under the Ringtones tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by selecting Apply and a sync to remove all custom ringtones from your iPhone followed by reselecting Sync Ringtones and selecting all custom ringtones available below that you want transferred to your iPhone if not already selected followed by a sync?

I found tutorial which will help (I think). I can't see any viable reason why a functioning phone would have ringtone limitations.

Hate to say it, but I am having the same problem. I am running iTunes 10.1.2.17 and the iPHONE 4 from Verizon. The ringtone displays in iTUNES in the ringtone section and I have tried both "Sync All Ringtones" and "Sync Selected" (then selected the one I want). Sync completes, however when I go to sounds on my phone, the only option is "Standard" and the ringtone is no where to be found

I have a Verizon iPhone 4 and have had no trouble adding multiple custom ringtones.

First, I create the ringtone in question. Then I convert it to an AAC file (I can do this within iTunes as long as AAC is my currently selected import method - just right-click the item in the library and "create AAC version").

Now comes the tricky part. I right-click the new AAC version, and show it in the Finder (this just makes the next steps). Now, back in iTunes, I delete the new AAC version I just created from my library, and elect to KEEP the file when asked. I then go to the Finder where my file still resides, change the extension to .m4r for that file, and then double-click it to open it in iTunes. iTunes then adds it to my ringtones folder.

Do ensure that when you sync your iPhone, you've selected appropriate settings under the ringtones tab.

I hope that helps!

I had the black berry storm and it was so easy to make ringtones. I've never really used itune for anything more that putting songs on my ipod. So now I have the iphone4 from Verizon an wanted new or better ringtones on it. Well I started reading this thread and first shot it worked. Got it in my ringtones and at first would not sync them in. unchecked sync ringtones and then sync again. Then rechecked sync ringtones and they went right into my phone. It works great. Thanks for all the great info. I knew nothing about itunes, and now I know a little more. If I can do it, then anyone can. Just read and follow.
Thank you everyone!

What you have to do first is put your ringtones inside the ringtones folder in the iTUNES LIBRARY. From there, click on your iPhone, click the ringtones tab at the top of your iPhone summary page, then check the "Sync" box, select apply, then sync it. Should work fine. I don't know why you have to sync ringtones from the library versus just adding the .m4r files yourself manually. They let you do it with you music. Hope I helped.

My procedure deviates from some of the others because I didn't want to hunt around in the iTunes directory for a dozen ringtones filed by artist, so I put them all in one folder. Here's what worked for me (using a iTunes 10.2.1.1 on a Windows 7 PC):

1. Use iTunes to shorten the MP3 clip to under 40 seconds (I have a 35-second clip that works)
2. Create an AAC file from the MP3 file.
3. Drag the AAC file(s) from iTunes to the O/S folder of your choice.

NOTE: This should make a COPY of the file in the folder.

* HERE IS THE IMPORTANT STEP *
4. DELETE THE ORIGINAL AAC FILE(S) FROM iTUNES. DO NOT KEEP THE FILE(S)!

REASON: Most of the tutorials that I read recommended selecting 'Keep Files' when you delete the song from iTunes. I found that keeping the original file masked my new file and prevented it from being registered with iTunes. To prove this, try dragging your new m4r file to iTunes. It will start playing. Then right-click on the playhead (at the top of the iTunes window where the file is playing), select Get Info, and observe which file is actually playing in the "Where" section. In my case the file playing was the original m4a file in the iTunes folder, NOT the one I had renamed.

5. NOW drag your m4r file(s) to iTunes. They should show up in the Ringtones section of the LIBRARY.

* HERE IS ANOTHER STEP THAT I NEEDED *
6. Open the Ringtones folder and drag the ringtones to your iPhone under DEVICES.

NOTE: The prior step may be because I don't automatically sync all music to my iPhone, but it worked for me.

7. Sync the iPhone and your ringtones should be available under Settings->Sounds->Ringtone.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Peter

There is a free way to create ringtones for the iphone. In iTunes, set your import settings to Apple Lossless Encoder. Then right click on the audio file you have as a ringtone and convert it to teh Apple Lossless one. Navigate through My Computer to the file and rename the extension .m4r. Add it to your itunes and it should show up in ringtones.
