Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk frustration

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 2TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk external hard drive. Unfortunately, there seems to be a conflict with either my hardware or software. The drive seems to go to sleep after a period on non-use and consequently crashes the Finder and various apps when trying to gain access. I can see the icon for the drive... even navigate down some recently used directories, but then I'll go too far, get the beach ball and have to force restart the entire machine. The same will happen if I'm using an app trying to access files on the drive. I can force quit the app and/or Finder, but they will not be available for use until I force quit the entire machine. I've been trying to solve this problem for a couple weeks now without success, so I thought I'd turn to the Mac community here.

* The drive has been reformatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
* I have used Seagate Diagnostics and the drive passes all tests.
* I have disabled drive sleep under Energy Saver.
* I have tested the drive on a MacBook running the same OS as my iMac (10.6.6) without a problem.
* I have disabled Time Machine backup to a TimeCapsule to see if that helps. Does not.
* I have disconnected other drives to see if that helps. Does not.
* I have disabled virus scans, media servers and other apps (that I know of) that sometime run in BG.
* I have tried different USB ports and different wall plugs.

I'm beginning to think there is some sort of compatibility issue with my hardware, but it could still be some sort of software that is conflicting. I simply cannot find the pattern.

I spoke with Seagate support and we got as far as the recommendation to test on another machine. The drive seemed to work fine there, so I'll have to continue troubleshooting with them from that point, but I thought someone here might have some ideas as well.

This question was answered LONG ago...yet everyone continues to add to it.

It is simple....

Apple's OSX has an issue with USB 3.0. When the computer/drives go to sleep, the USB 3.0 loses ajust a tiny bit of power. In doing so, it undocks the drive, as well as goofs someother things up. It doesn't matter how many files/drivers/apps/etc you install/uninstall/upgrade...it will not work properly because of the USB 3.0 issue.

It is that simple.

So....you either need to get the GoDesk for Mac, which will comewith the Firewire, or take it back and get a Western Digital drive.

EVERYONE!!!!! Quit beating your head against the wall with trying these silly little gimmicks. The USB 3.0 issue with Apple is the issue. It's been confirmed.

Actually, I stopped beating my head against the wall when my harddrive started functioning PERFECTLY after deleting the drivers. Maybe you should constructively help people solve their problems instead of saying that "it simply won't work".

Delete the drivers and it will work fine. Works for me, and I had tried many things before this...

vineefromsylvania, I have the Seagate GoFlex Desk for Mac 3 TB, that I received and installed a couple months ago. I just hooked up the FireWire 800 to my IMac, I did not install any files or drivers, and have not had any problems with this drive at all. I would suggest (if possible) that you return your FreeAgent GoFlex drive, and exchange it for the the GoFlex for Mac drive. I really think the others have a problem with the Lion X operating system,

Hmm... Before I discovered this thread, I just ordered STAC FreeAgent GoFlex Desk USB 3.0 with FW800 interface module. Unfortunately, they don't sell STBC models in Korea.

My question is, why did you guys intall the Seagate driver in the first place?

Does it automatically install the driver on Mac when first plugged? If so, it's outrageous.

Hopefully, I won't have any problems because I won't intall the driver unless the hard-drive does automatically.

You guys are great. I purchased the Seagate GoFlex Desk Freeagent and have had the same problems. Without all of you taking the time to post replys I would have never figured this out. I had someone put my iTunes, iPhotos, and all my iMovies on to this drive and have spent the last 6 days trying to get it all back off of the drive. I got Seagate to send me a new Mac drive. I finally had to delete all Seagate drivers, unplug the drive and reboot. The last big 59 GB file was transferred. I have Lion on my Mac.

Thanks to all of you.

After visiting the Seagate support forums and finding out hoe folks dealt with this issue, I purchased a Seagate Firewire 800/USB 2.0 Desktop Adapter to replace the usb 3.0 version that comes with the drive. It cost me about an extra $27 bucks but the drive stays mounted and the finder doesn't freeze. Moral of thre story - that drive is NOT mac compatible in the USB 3.0 version despite everything Seagate claims

Macs are not USB3 compatible either.

I bought an iMac with Lion installed and upgraded to 10.7.3 then upgraded to 16 GB of RAM and bought the 3 TB Seagagte GoFlex over the WD external of the same price. Huge mistake - HUGE! Like others here I spent weeks reinstalling Lion, running diagnostics and this and that until the frustration finally took over and I was ready to return the iMac back to BestBuy. BTW, I'm no stranger to the Macs, starting with a 6100/60 and never looking back.... that little rascal cost me $3,000.00!!!!

Anyway, after doing one more search I came across someone here that stated the Seagate goes to sleep and crashed the Lion finder, precisely what was happening to me. Visits to Seagats's web site turned up some software additions that did absolutely nothing! Having to use the power button on the back to turn off the machine every 15 minutes or so simply wasn't going to work for me. Nothing I did worked with the Seagate, until I returned it to BestBuy and got the Western Digital 3 TB drive which is working PERFECTLY!! Virtually all my problems are gone and believe it or not, The Customer Service folks were more than nice about it even though I had no reciept or box for the Seagate. Plus, and get this, they gave me 10% off the WD Drive!!!

Now I may even learn to like Lion.... I'm working on that one!!!! But I'm much happier now! Next time, I'm going with my instincts and not listening to the salesperson.

Moral of the story, get a Western Digital and turn away from the Seagate. Unless of course you like frustration, agony and being in a bad mood. I'm sure the Seagates work great, must not with the iMac with Lion installed.

Since the two theories are either uninstalling the seagate drivers or dealing with the incompatible USB 3.0 cable, and since I can't do anything about the latter, does anyone know if uninstalling the drivers and all seagate files will in any way risk the data on my drive?

Apparently, this is what I should do:

"I have just found this fix, and have noted that no one from Seagate has responded. Seagate, this is something you need to fix as soon as possible or at least include in your documentation. I have a FreeAgent GoFlex Desk STAC2000303 and this fix worked perfectly.

  1. Download Find Any File
  2. Search "Seagate" and delete all files found
  3. Empty Trash
  4. Eject Drive and unplug USB
  5. Reboot Mac
  6. Plug USB back in

You wont have the indicator lights at the bottom of the drive indicating capacity anylonger, but everything should work now.

Seagate.. please fix this."

But I want to make sure that doing this won't affect all the data already on my drive. Thanks all!

No matter what you do, it would be a good idea to back up both the external drive and your boot volume before doing this sort of surgery on your system, just in case. *hint* *hint*

With that in mind, if memory serves, Seagate's drivers allow you to mount an NTFS volume as read-write. Thus, whether it affects the data on your drive or not depends mainly on how you set the drive up to begin with.

* If you reformatted the drive as HFS+ when you first got it, then I would expect the drive to continue to work normally (minus any special backup features or whatever) after you delete Seagate's drivers.

* If you did not reformat the drive as HFS+ when you got it, then removing those drivers will make it impossible to add, delete, rename, or modify files until you reformat the drive (which erases any files already on it).

Helpful tip: remember to eject the drive, unplug it, and reboot before deleting drivers.

I don't have time to go through all these posts, so long story short ...

I am a photographer with more than 15TB of external storage, and this is by far the worst experience I've had with a drive. I've wasted enough time and lost hours of work due to the forced shutdowns, that all I'm going to do is take the machine back and get something else.

I just hope that I can get all the data I put on this drive to transfer to another one before it kills my whole system.
