Can't setup Hotmail Pop account in mail app

New macbook
All updates
Gmail works in mail app fine
hotmail account created 2007

Problem; i can't add a hotmail account.

It says it can't verify the user/pass. I have tried to delete and re-add but it doesn't work.

Could any genius troubleshoot this one?
I literally, add a new account
user is the email
pass is the password for the webmail version
setup for pop

won't go past this screen 😟

Hello MusioMan,

I had the same trouble setting up hotmail into Mail OS X "El Capitan". The issue is on the restrictions on hotmail, it can be solved doing the following:

Sing into your hotmail account, in the upper right side click your name account select set up account, at the top theres a banner where displays "privacy and security" (or something like that, is the last option), click on it and scroll down until you find two step verification, and remove it. Scroll down and find ID app (or something related) and Remove it also, scroll down and find trust devices (or something related) and Remove it.

there you go!!! Go back to system preferences on you Mac and add your hotmail account from the option "other accounts"

Be happy 🙂

I ran into the same problem and was able to get it going as follows:-

In the following dialog-box that gives you error-message "Unable to verify account name or password", just press the "Next" button anyways.

The dialog-box will change to the following and then, insert "outlook.office365.com" (...without quotes, i.e.) in both the internal and external URL fields and press "Sign In" button.

The dialog-box should change to the following. Press "Done" to finish the process.

Please try this and let me know if it works for you guys too!

I've had this problem for weeks after updating to El Capitan but I've figured it out!

It's not a problem with the Mail app but a (new?) setting on the Outlook/Live/Hotmail/Whatever account.

  • Log into your Outlook account on the web.
  • In the top right hand corner, click the gear symbol, and select Options
  • You'll get a new window with a menu down the left side with expanding headers like Shortcuts, General, Mail etc
  • Expand the Mail menu, if it isn't expanded already
  • About 12 items down the list, under the Accounts sub-menu, you should see POP and IMAP
  • Click POP and IMAP
  • You'll see here that the very first item on this page is "Let other devices and apps use POP" and - well for me anyway - it'll be set to "No"
  • Set it to "Yes" (there's another option below to decide whether to delete downloaded messages off Outlook, but that's your call)
  • At the top of the page, click Save.

Right after I did this, Mail immediately started downloading my emails. I have 61 to go through now...

This is a weird setting and I'm really annoyed Outlook have introduced it and not had a troubleshoot or notification page set-up somewhere so when those of us affected by this search the web for a solution, we can be brought to an explanation from Outlook; instead we're torturing Apple, thinking it's their fault.

Oh well, least it's fixed!

Hello everybody:

I have the same issue and for some reason can't solve it, even following these instructions, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I've changed the settings from outlook.com activating POP from other devices

Also changed the "internal URL" and "external URL" settings in the "Mac Mail" settings which brings the dialogue box that shows "Mail, contacts, calendars, etc"

However after this I receive a message saying "Unable to verify account name or password"; password is correct and user is correct.

Don't know what to do and I would really appreciate some help, I'm new to Mac and not too familiar with it yet.

Thanks a lot! :-)

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

Delete the password from Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities). While there, Keychain Access menu First Aid.
