Can't setup Hotmail Pop account in mail app

New macbook
All updates
Gmail works in mail app fine
hotmail account created 2007

Problem; i can't add a hotmail account.

It says it can't verify the user/pass. I have tried to delete and re-add but it doesn't work.

Could any genius troubleshoot this one?
I literally, add a new account
user is the email
pass is the password for the webmail version
setup for pop

won't go past this screen 😟

These settings work:

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Thanks for the reply. Couldn't get it to work 😟

When we click 'add account' it asks for an email and pass. We put the correct details in and always get the error
'logging into the hotmail pop server failed. Make sure you have the correct user and pass' etc

Can't even get past that screen. Any ideas?

A Hotmail account is one that Mail should setup automatically with only your email address and Password needed -- it has the needed details to go from there.

Create a New User Account, and as that New User try to set up this Hotmail account and test. If not familiar with setting up a New User Account, see:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html

This will be a useful test, and obviously is not meant to suggest a permanent switch to the New User Account, but rather a test of all the factors outside your normal User Account. It would bypass any problems in the current User Account. Since this is a POP account, make sure to set to leave messages on the server after download. Keep us posted.

I'm having the same problem. I bought my first mac and the Apple Mail successfully set up my gmail account and I was able to manually set up a separate IMAP account in Apple Mail. But when Apple Mail set up my hotmail account, it told me that the user/password aren't verified and won't work. Sure enough, the hotmail account always shows as offline, and when I try to take all accounts online, I am prompted for my hotmail password, which is then rejected. I am able to access my hotmail account via Safari using the same user/password, so I know the user name and password are correct. And I checked the POP server, port and ssl settings in the non-working hotmail account that Apple Mail set up, and they are the same ones recommended by hotmail. I tried your suggestion of setting up a new user on my mac and trying to set up the hotmail account in that new user's Mail account, and I had the exact same problem. Help!

It is a common behavior with a Hotmail account to have annoying PW prompts. When it starts doing this, it may be easiest to disable the auto-check for new messages, and then check manually. Seems to work without issue. Then change it back and see if you can go for a time without the behavior.

Having said that, it should work to get setup. Be sure to enter the entire email address as the entry for Username, btw.

Thanks so much for your ideas, but I've never been able to get a connection, so the problem isn't PW prompts. It thinks my password is incorrect, but my password works fine when I log on using Safari. The message I get from Apple Mail is:

"Logging in to the Hotmail POP server “pop3.live.com” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages."

Thanks again,
Maureen
