Time Capsule Ethernet connection

Hi,

I set up my TC and wanted to do the first back-up by ethernet. However the TC only shows up when I have wiFi enabled.

I added the TC to an existing WiFi network (802.11N) is this why it wouldn't let me connect the mac directly.... for the first back-up ??

MacBook 13" 2.4Ghz 2GB 250GB (aluminum Body), Mac OS X (10.6)

Welcome to the discussions, Mark!

If by "add" you mean that you configured the TC to "join a wireless network", the ethernet ports are not enabled in that type of configuration and you'll need to do the first backup using wireless.

If you have the ability to connect your TC to your wireless router using an ethernet cable, you could do backups over ethernet or wireless. A few reconfiguration steps will be needed, but it will only take a few minutes.

You might decide that this type of setup was superior to the wireless only approach and leave things configured this way permanently, or you could switch back to the "join" mode after the first backup was completed.

Hi Bob,

Not sure whether this thread is still running - but here goes (I'm a senior citizen who's not techie)!

My stepson gave me his MacBook Pro 5,5 (running Mac OS X vs 10.6.8) and TC (500GB) a year ago and they've worked together fine on automatic backup with a Netgear wireless network router.

Recently, we upgraded to BT Ultra Broadband and our provider supplied a technicolor TG582n wireless network router. This new set-up is great for my laptop, my wife's non-Mac laptop, our mobile phones, etc - excellent download and upload speeds.

However, I can't now to get the TC to work. The TC is connected to the technicolor router by an ethernet cable but the TC just flashes an orange light (instead of steady green). When I go to Applications > Utilities -> AirPort utility it says 'unable to find any Airport wireless devices' so the "Manual Setup" - referred to by previous contributors above - is greyed out.

Don't know what to do. My stepson, who seems pretty computer-literate, is unable to work out the problem.

Would be most grateful for help.

It is often better to just start a new thread.

But what you need to do is fairly simple.

Plug the TC into your computer by ethernet. Turn off all the other network connections.. ie wireless in the computer. so you have TC with nothing else connected and the Computer plugged into LAN port of the TC.. ie one with <->

Now open the airport utility. If the TC does not show up, press and hold the reset button for about 10sec until it starts to flash rapidly.. the TC should then show up. Tell us if you have issues.

Once you have access to the TC.. go and set the TC to bridge mode.

Setup the wireless of the TC.

I think it is easier to give it a simple name.. and you can either set channels manually or leave it on auto.

Set WPA2 Personal security.. the picture is from older setup.. but that will also work.. but not as good security. Type in your password for wireless. and type in the verify.

Click the update.. and now you can unplug the TC from the cmputer and plug it into the new modem router.

Check now and you should be able to access it once you connect to its wireless. Or even the wireless of the Thomson modem.

Thanks very much for your reply.

I've done as instructed, viz. plugged the TC into my computer by ethernet, turned off all the other network connections - i.e. wireless in the computer - so only the TC is connected via its LAN port (the one with <->) to my computer.

When I open the airport utility, the TC does not show up - my TC doesn't have a reset button but is flashing rapidly? (every 2 secs) - but the airport utility says its searching for wireless items. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Your gen1 TC is now 4years old and it is EOL.. ie in dire need of replacement.

Rapidly flashing LED is about 3times per sec.. it is not at all like the slow amber flash once every 2sec.

Turn off the TC.. hold in the reset button.. Your TC does have a reset button next to the kensington lock.. a little hole.. poke a toothpick into the hole and carefully press in until you feel the switch turn on. Then power up the TC.. without releasing the reset.. keep holding until the front led flashes rapidly.. about 15sec.. if it doesn't change you have not done it correctly.. start over.
