Gmail error "The user name or password for Gmail is incorrect"

Starting the other day I am getting the above error when I try to access my gmail account on my iphone4 and I get the same error on my iMac. This is the 2nd or maybe 3 time this has happened. The last was exactly month ago.

Also keep in mind I can access gmail directly on the web using the same id and pw that is in iphone and mail app on imac. The last time in Jan I tried deleting and reinstalling my gmail account 4-5 times but with no luck, same error msg and gave up. A couple days later and it just started working again.

Any idea's on what could be causing this and is anyone else having similar issue with gmail?

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

You are absolutely correct.

Gmail had stopped working on my Iphone after I had changed to a 14 letter password. Changed it back to 9 and Gmail is back on my Iphone. But after I changed the password I also had to do an unlock captcha (which only produce effect after I changed the password, I had tried it before changing the password and it had no effect). https://www.googleaccounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.

So I had to do the two things :

1) password under 10 digits and

2) unlock captcha

my problem was it was due to 2-step authentication. Here is how I fixed mine:

enter your gmail via the web

click on account setting

click on using 2-step authentication

click on Manage application-specific passwords

click onStep 1 of 2: Generate new application-specific password

insert ie. mail5

generate password.

Grab this password and use it to setup a new gmail account in system preferences, mail/contacts/calendars and you should be sorted.

Are you facing some issues with GMail on your Client/Mobile devices ? I had this issue during a few days and the main error message was: “Cannot Get Mail The user name or password is incorrect” or something referred to the imap and smtp server with wrong username and password.

This problem will cause effects on your mobile devices or e-mail client tools. The WebMail – mail.gmail.com will continue to work.

I've published the complete reference at:

Like ebarlier and clebervisconti, my issue was a result of the two step identification process. There was more involved than the simple unlock suggested early in the thread. If the unlock does not work, do what ebarlier did if you want to keep two step identification in place. This is what I did. If you don't care about having two-step identification, do waht clebervisconti suggests. I accidentally figured it out by searching my gmail settings before I saw either of their suggestions. I guess that shows that it pays to read all of the posts. 🙂

This was my solution as well. If you use 2-step authentication, and one of your applications (e.g., Apple Mail) is getting a password error but other applications (e.g, iPad mail) are connecting, try what ebarlier suggests. The only difference I would suggest is to first revoke the password for the application that's misbehaving, and then generate a new application-specific password.

I found that when you turn on or are using the "Using 2 Step Verification" that you must use both passwords - the account password and the 2 step verification password.

1. Set up the Gmail account as the instructions state using the pasword for the gmail account.

2. Go into the account settings (PC) and click the "Using 2 Step Verification"

3. You need to provide a name for the "Application Specific passwords."

4. Name the application - Phone/IPhone/Mail/ - whatever you want

5. Click GENERATE Password

6. This long string of characters needs to be entered into the pop up that occurs after you get all the check marks from the previous setup.

Once this key is entered, the email and calendar will sync. (At least it did for me after an afternoon of attempts).
