Handbrake

It was suggested that I use handbrake to convert non-itunes formatted video files (inherited or downloaded from the internet) to play on my ipad. However, when I go to the website and download the application it says "You can't open the application Handbrake because it is not supported on this type of MAC."

I chose the 64 bit option because I run MAC OS X 10.6.6.

What am I doing wrong?

Are there any other alternative programs that are better than handbrake?

Go here for how to check if you are running 64 bit. Note that the comments on the page says the default is 32 bit. I use Handbrake and it works great.

Your system profile at the bottom of your post indicates that you are using a first generation MacBook. That computer would only have a 32 bit processor, so you cannot run 64 bit code on it. OS X 10.6.6 can run on either 32 bit or 64 bit processors.

The Handbrake download page contains a link for a 32 bit version of Handbrake. That is the version you will need to use.

@ lllaass -- You can run 64 bit code on a system booted to a 32 bit kernel. You can even run 64 bit code in OS X 10.5.x as long as you have a 64 bit processor.

Make sure you have a 64bit version of vlc.
Handbrake requires it for the 64bit version.
