i resolved this issue by simply changing my region, one has to restart springboard or may restart phone.
if still not solved try switiching on/off international assist in settings. and restart springboard again...
Could you kindly elaborate it more?
1) Which country are you in?
2) Which region format did you choose that resolved the issue?
I tried all region formats (English ones); restarted my phone after every change, but still the issue is persistant. :(
Hello,
Same here, have changed, and changed, the region, have switched of the International Assist, switched off phone, rebooted phone, issue still exists.
My country, Ghana, by the way, is not listed in the Regions.
Normally would leave on the United Kingdom, but have tried every other region just to try and resolve this issue,
no luck.
What is "Springboard", BTW...?
A new dimension to this problem:
Okay, here is what I did.
1) I changed the "region format" back to United Kingdom; restarted my phone; made one manual entry of my other phone number (from a different carrier, let's assign it a name "Carrier-B) into my contacts with "international code"; called to my number (assign a name Carrier-A) in iPhone and Voila..!! It displayed the name. I, then tested it on an incoming international call and it displayed the name again, instead of displaying "blocked call". Now, the problem persists with incoming calls from "Carrier-A" (mobile + landline [landline in Maldives is also operated by Carrier-A]). Carrier-A hold the major market and almost 90 % of all my local contacts are from Carrier-A. In the end, I am still left with no name display from majority of my contacts.
So, I reckon, this caller-ID feature is programmed as operator dependent by Apple. I could be wrong. Anyone with a better inference?
P.S: Carrier-A & Carrier-B are not the official Apple partner. What I came to know is that Carrier-B has an infrastructure based on AT&T and Carrier-A has some different (I forgot the name. I'll mention it in my next threat after reconfirming it).
Bro do this. It works...
First select your region format and then reset all settings. After this restart ure phone.
I have done like this and it works.
Yes, some people have reported resetting all settings to solve the problem. For me it works for a very short time: the first incoming call. When the next call comes in, the problem is back again.
I have heard from a developer source that this problem is fixed in the coming update. So soon all these workarounds will no longer be needed.
Thats cool but for me it works well. Now i am not facing any problem. Best of luck for future.
Thanks, but that didn't work for me. We have 4 Carriers here i Ghana, and with 5,500 Contacts (many with at least 4 phone numbers), I may have been unlucky in finding numbers in my address book from a carrier that this solution would work with.
No joy for me, unfortunately.
Tried that again and again, flameboys, has not worked for me.
I have selected the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, the USA,
etc etc, and done as directed and then re-booted/reset, but no luck.
Unfortunately.
Confirmed (at least on my phone) that the 5.1 update finally solved this problem. Now I had to reverse the workaround of adding duplicate contact numbers without country codes to all my contacts :S
Thanks for that abubasim66. Am downloading the software now.
Im in Botswana. My contact problem has been that sms requires our local country code and phone calls not. As a result if you have not got the number in twice for each contact, one way or another it will miss the contact name.
Gosh, my fifty buck Nokia never caused problems like this!
Considering that the new update (5.1) is not stable (based on so many bugs already being reported), I am not going to update my iOS. I was half way to update completion when I decided to go through the feedback and immediately cancelled the update afterward.

Well done impious-rocker. The new update has had absolutely no effect on the contacts problem in my phone
Aww.. I am sorry to hear that. It's strange though, as from what I heard and read on different forum, the new update has solved the caller I.D. issue.
Well your country "Botswana" is mentioned in the "Region Format". Double check if you had it selected. If, not select it and then "Restart" your phone and then call on your iPhone number from a different line/mobile to check if it solved the issue. (Make sure to save that number first in your contact with International country code).
If it doesn't work, then try this.
Do a hard reset. (press and hold "display on and off" button on top along with "home" button for about 20 seconds. Ignore the "red slider" till it shows the apple logo. You will not loose any data. Try calling on your iPhone number again.
if it also doesn't solve the issue , then try this.
Change your "region format" to different countries one by one (excluding ones in which display fomat is in the local language) followed by a "Phone restart" after each change. Once restarted, call on your iPhone number from a different line/mobile to check if it solved the issue. Begin with "United Kingdom" first.
I know it sounds like a nerve wrecking drill, but I think it worths a try if it solves the issue in the end.
One more thing. Make sure you don't have the same number (with or without international code) saved in 2 different contacts. In that case, it won't show the caller I.D. Also, if you have saved the same number for a particular contact with AND without International code (work around for your local SMS and calls); remove the one without an International code and then see if it displays the name for that contact. (I am just improvising).

I just got my iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by AT&T since it's out of contract. I popped my Korean SIM card in tonight and after that only some of my texts were showing the number and not the name. I tried changing Region Format to no avail.
Short term solution I just added the number to the phone and got rid of the old number without the country code and added the new one with the +1 for the US numbers that weren't displaying correctly.
I have to go get a new SIM Card from my carrier here since the one I put in didn't work. I guess I'll have to wait until that happens to see.
