iMovie file size too large for one DVD

I've created my iMovie file and am ready to burn a DVD using iDVD to view on TV. Although my iMovie is only about 35 minutes, it is 7.73 GB. It is a simple movie. I only have a few titles, cross dissolves between clips and some audio.

How do I reduce my iMovie to fit on one DVD?

I don't have the option to "Export" under the "File" menu. And I've tried several of the "Share" formats which reduce the size, but none of them have given me TV viewing quality.

I am using iMovie HD 5 and the movie is widescreen.

Thanks!

iDVD encodes (compresses) the video before burning
the DVD, so there's no problem. Your iMovie project
will fit.

The iDVD capacity is best expressed in time instead
of size. iMovie 4/5 can include up to 2 hours of
video. A little less, counting iDVD features.

Hi Karl
I have an iMovie file that is 3hr and 10min long. I have a dual layer burner and dual layer DVD's to burn onto. Will this file fit onto the 8.5GB disc? or do I have to compress it somehow? If there is some software that will do this could you let me know?

The dual layer DVD's say they will fit 215 min of video on them, so why does it reject my file when starting iDVD?
Thanks for your help

I have an iMovie project that is also 3 hours, do I
have to split iit up into two parts to burn it onto
single sided DVDs?

Yup.

Can I do that by copy and paste?

Yup.

Just make sure that when you Copy and Paste clips, you Copy all the clips you want at the same time. If you Copy and Paste clips more than one time iMovie may copy the source file two or more times, making the project needlessly large.

Another solution is to use the Finder to duplicate the project. Edit one copy for DVD 1 and the other for DVD 2. That's simpler if you have complicated audio clips (which cannot be copied with video clips).

please, kids, keep calm...

iDVD cares for length, not size

Apple had done this for YOUR convenience... the length of a project is by far easier to estimate then its size....

and:
iMovie's, and iDVD's native format is "dv", not "any" mpeg codec!
any other fileformat needs to be converted to make iM/iDVD work...
mepgs are for playback, not for processing....

<me sad>

Hi sharky,

where do you want to go today...? 😉

iM works with dv
iDVD works with dv
hit iDVD in iM - you're done... no need for any knowledge of codecs, bitrates, mpegs, whatever...

why mp4? where does it come from? why could this source not offer dv?

yepp, QTpro converts mp4 into dv, and some mp4 can be imported directly into iDVD - as long it plays under 120minutes!....................

Ah yes, there's the rub!

The mp4's are dvd rips using handbrake. There...I said it. I'm trying to copy them to dvd, so that I don't have to keep renting them over and over (and over). I could just copy them to tape the old fashioned way, but where's the fun in that? I also tried dvd2pod. Neither of them seem to have an 'import to dv' function...it's all mp4.

Do you know of any progs that rip to dv? That said, what are the options for a mp4 to dv conversion?

Blood fading away in the ocean, fearing I've missed my chance at bait! 🙂
Darren.
