Bluetooth audio problem and 2011 Mazda 3

There is a great deal of conflicting information in regards to bluetooth audio compatibility and various cars (2011 Mazda 3 in my case) and the iphone 4... So I'm trying to get a straight answer!

Anyway my car (according to Mazda) supports AVRCP 1.3, however when pairing to my Verizon iPhone (4.2.6), the car reports BT Audio (which denotes that the device has less than AVRCP 1.3 support).

So question 1... Does the iphone support AVRCP 1.3 in its entirety or is it some limited incarnation of it or simply just A2DP?

Question 2... The options that I have with BT Audio allow me to skip the track, but won't allow me to pause/stop (I hit the pause/stop and the audio stops for split second and then restarts) So what's the story here?

Question 3... What am I supposed to expect from the iphone 4 in terms of bluetooth support? i.e.
Plays blue tooth audio? (Yes it does that quite well in my car)
Allows Skip, Pause functions from car controls? (It skips track, but NOT Pause)
Shows current playing track? (Ok I'd assume that the most advanced smart phone on the planet would support this simple function, but I don't believe it does and if it doesn't...why not?)

Answers anyone?

So I paired my iPhone 4S, which is advertised as bluetooth 4.0. Still no information showing on the dashboard. Strangely, I've since moved on to a Samsung Galaxy S 2 SkyRocket (yeah, that's a long @ss name). Its got bluetooth 3.0, and when paired shows all information just fine. I was led to believe this was an issue with the Mazda, but it seems to be Apple's (likely non-standard) implemntation of bluetooth.

Purchased a 2012 Touring with the Bose package. IPhone IOS5 Bluetooth streaming works fine, but no song info in the display, which, according to the manual, it should show this info. Did a comparison with our friend's 2010 CX-9 which displays the song data, we also notice that the rear view camera shows reference lines on the display to assist in backing up. Our car doesn't have these lines, nor are they included in the manual as a feature.

This definitely indicates some sort of firmware delta between the 2010 and 2012 CX-9s for the information display.

Definitely not a problem with the IPhone since my phone displayed the song data in their car and their phone did not show the data in my car.

Spoke with the dealer about this. According to them, in mid 2011 after the Japan Tsunami, any new CX-9s did not have the rear view reference lines. I have a feeling that Mazda changed suppliers and the new suppliers did not implement (or partially implemented) the AVRCP 1.3 BT protocol.

Since our manual indicates that our car should support the BT song info on the display, I've raised the issue with Mazda Customer Care who is working with our dealer to identify the issue. I should also mention that the Service Mgr at our dealer is working with the company that maintains the Mazda audio units to figure out what's going on. I'm getting calls every few hours from both the Service Mgr and CC asking questions to help in their investigation, so Ii know their working on it.

I also contacted Mazda's NA Operations, Office of the President, about this issue and their are also aware of it.

Did you ever get any resolution of this issue with Mazda or Apple? I have had my 2012 Grand Touring for less than a week, and I am very disappointed not to be able to see albums, song names, etc, when the car is paired with my iPhone 4. My husband's Droid X works just fine and he can see this information. I've tried other Apple devices in the car (older iTouch and newer iPhone 4) and while all will pair and play the device's music, no song information is ever included. Is there any recourse or solution, or do I just have to settle?

Hello All.

With a quite late reply i wanted to share my findings with the 2012 Mazda 3 and bluetooth metadata transmition.

I've tried on it iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, Samsungs Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3.

The car supports displaying metadata, it's just quite picky on the way how. Android and iOS are told to both support AVRCP v1.3 which the car would work with but...

The car displays BT AUDIO on 3Gs and iPhone4 and also some custom roms on Android on the S2. But note that this is because the roms and the two phones above didn't actually support 1.3 of the protocol but only the basic 1.0 or none.

The 4s didn't also display information on the dash but it showed the possibilities of it. Meaning that has some support but it seems not properly working with the car's audio. The S3 and S2 (when with stock ROMS) show song metadata with original players but not track time. When tried with custom player metadata don't work.

Thats it. The car is just very picky about what to display and what not. To my surprise i found that Blackberry has great support for this car... Not getting BB though 🙂.

As for iOS devices. Only hope of an actual fix is the new iPhone 5 and the hope that it would work properly with the audio system. I personally haven't tried it.

Mazda 3 2011 not displaying song information from iPhone 5s connected via BT.

Any news on this? Is it apple or is it Mazda that needs to fix this?

My old Blackberry 6500 worked just fine and based on other post, other phones will work. So its hard to say that the Mazda 3 doesn't work, when there are examples of it working with other phones. I assume the iPhone pairs fine with other cars out there, sound titles shown clearly and all, so the iPhone will work with some cars.

I wouldn't bother seeking help if I drove some obscure random car that only me and few niche fans drove. Between 2010 and 2013 there were a little over 400,000 cars sold in the US. And if the iPhone has roughly 20% (you can Google both of those stats) of the phone market that's about 80,000 people who have an iPhone and Mazda 3 who are disappointed customers.

(I know more factors play into it, so my estimate might be off. But its a rough idea of how many people are affected)

I would to see this fixed. Not only just to have it work, but to see that Apple goes above and beyond to make sure their products are the best on the market.
