moviebox dv w/ final cut pro.. not working!!!

alright i've had this thing working before when i bought it on my mom's 17 inch powerbook rev c 1.5 gigs of ram back when panther was still out.. and once we upgraded to tiger back in april it hasn't worked. Just to see if it was her system I put it on my new dual core g5 and still same issue. it sees the chipset on the pinnacle moviebox but when i hit play on the vcr (selection is on rca) and then play in final cut pro... no luck. can anyone help me with this?? because pinnacle sure wasn't able to... ugh.

Dual Core 2.3 G5, Mac OS X (10.4.3), 4.5 gigs of RAM, 2 x 400 gig SATA raid 0 , 6600 GT 256meg

I am guessing that it is a problem with Quicktime based on your description.
One indication of this will be that you are unable to get QT 7.0X to see your box to record from it. If that turns out to be the case, check all the Quicktime related Preferences in your user Library. Trash all the old ones, if any are still around. If that does not work, you may have to trash all QT preferences and re-install it.

I've actually been reading this whole post wrong. Sorry.

You are saying you can't get it to show up in FCP as an input device. I thought you were trying to get OUT of fcp back to VCR. Oops.

Ok --

What is the chipset? Why do you think that matters?

"Then play in FCP" -- really? Not capture?

Are you in Log and Capture window? Do you see ANYTHING in the preview window?

Have you tried hooking up a standard DV camera up to the FW port to see if you can capture ANYTHING?

Sorry for my confusion.

i need to input video... it won't show up in preview even if the vcr is playing and i hit play. i don't have a dv camcorder or anything but i know for a fact in imovie i can capture with my isight.. but i dunno i've tried multiple cables and what not... it can't be the cable though if it sees the pinnacle firewire chipset on the pinnacle moviebox dv in system profiler.

Since I'm the one who first suggested it was QT issue and not FCP nor your crazy box, the least I can do is direct you to the treasure trove of information. Go to the Quicktime for Mac Forum. It is there, after you search, you will find where your QT Preferences lurk, to replace them by a re-install of QT 7.0X.
Hint: QT preferences are located in the User/library/ preferences.

CaptM...

I'm cross posting this to the FCP list because it is directly applicable to FCP as well as FCE. This has been a huge source of frustration to me, and I hope that this post will help a few people avoid that).

I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).

The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:

1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).

2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.

3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.

4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCE and see your camera.

I hope this works for you as well as it does for me. The Apple tech said this was the first case he'd seen for FCE, but that over the last couple of days, he'd had success with it for several FCP users.

Enjoy!

On the assumption you have replaced QT, trashed preferences of FCP ( and iMovie), etc. I was wondering if you have tried a) removing all FW devices except your box and or b) logged on as a different user and still experienced the same problem? I assume you can use one of your 400 FW ports directly for the FW attempt. By all, I mean ALL FW DEVICES.
By the way, did you succeed in getting QT to at least record? If you cannot do that you are not going to get FCP nor iMovie to capture either.
