Changing Apple ID on my iPhone

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out how to change the apple ID associated with my iphone. The phone was initially a gift that my ex registered with her account info. Now, I can't update apps without it asking for that particular password and using her account information. I believe she has an iphone now with the same apple ID, so I don't want to screw around with anything. I tried to associate the iphone with my own information in My Account, by registering the serial number of the iphone, but it does not appear to have switched to my account info. Any insight would be great!

Thanks.

Hi, folks! I am out of my element. 😕 Please help.

I have been having issues with my iphone 4S all month in a busy spring break area...and the Life 360 app quit working completely. They supposedly got that fixed on their end, but I still have issues.

During this time my phone did an automatic update. Then it told me to sync with iTunes on my son's computer!...which I have not done. Then the Weather Channel announced an update, but asks for my son's Apple ID (who originally set up my phone for me, but we thought we had that changed to a new ID for me); so I thought my phone had reverted to my son's ID during the update and that I was having the same problem as Weird Dad.

When I followed Lawrence's advice, I discovered my phone IS registered in my ID. So, should I just use my son's ID to update weather or should I somehow change that? If I need to change that, how do I do it?

And, will change cause further problems or is it possible that current problems are due to mixed IDs?

Also, do I need to sync with iTunes on my computer? (Kindly indulge this old dog who is trying to learn new tricks) ...If so, why? And how do I do that?

Thank you,

sherrah,

Now that the ICloud is in place, you have a choice where you wish to backup. I personally back mine up to the ICloud since it will sync my Iphone and Ipad, etc. all in one place. Once you turn on the ICloud it will only back up there unless you change it. If you prefer to sync to your computer, then yes you need to plug in and sync it. This will save you a lot of heartache when something goes wrong and you need to re-set it. Your apps and contacts and information will all be backed up to your home PC or ICloud - whichever you choose.

When you initially set up your Iphone you had to open Itunes and get an account. So when you plug it into your computer, ITunes should launch and it will automatically back it up and tell you not to disconnect until it is done.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Thank you, Judy for trying to help. My question is still whether I should connect my phone to my computer or wait until I can connect to my son's (as the phone is telling me) or connect to my computer with my son's iTune ID or connect to my computer and try to change the ID to a new one for me. Everything else on my phone is registered to me, and I would like to get off of son's iTune ID but am unsure about trying it until I get home. I cannot afford to have it messed up and not working while I'm travelling.

Can you clarify one point please?

If a backup of contacts is done to iCloud and then the next backup is done with iTunes on a PC, does switching back to backing up on a PC remove the earlier backup from iCloud or do both backups remain valid for restoring contacts should the need arise?

Problem solved. Yay! 😀

It turns out that while my correct ID was on iTunes (under Settings/Store) like Lawrence advised, the Cloud still had my phone on my son's ID. I discovered this while working with a very helpful fellow named Ivan at Apple Support. To change that, I had to go to Settings/iCloud. It took awhile and several tries as it tried and failed to validate, but eventually accepted my ID temporarily while directing me to go to my email on my computer to verify. Now all is well. Thank you so much for your concern and encouragement.

Judy, you might be interested in what the Support fellow suggested. He thought it was important not only to backup to iCloud for when disaster strikes our devices; but also to sync to computer to back up data there, in case something happens to the Cloud. It seems nothing is invulnerable.

Thanx!

itAliya,

Hi! When I changed my ID on my iphone, I didn't see an "edit" option either. So maybe my experience will help you, I hope. After going to Settings/iCloud, I was told to scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says DELETE ACCOUNT. After deleting my son's account from my phone, I was able to enter my own ID. It took a few tries and some time while it tried to validate the new ID and then it told me to go to my email on my computer to respond for verification. Good Luck!
