MacBookPro5,4 - Issues with Seagate Momentus 750gb

Trying to upgrade the HDD in my MBP. I am on my second drive from OWC and still having the same issues.

When the Seagate is installed internally I cannot get OS X (10.6) to install. Says "30 mins remaining" for about 20mins then fails. This is a freshly partitioned (Journaled - GUID) empty drive.

I can install OS X (10.6) to the HDD when it is mounted in an external enclosure. With this setup the I can boot and run programs. I was even able to restore the disk with time machine.

If I take this mounted externally restored/or fresh install drive and install it internally I get a startup sound then a grey screen followed by the apple icon, a circle with crossbar icon, and a folder with question mark icon flicker/cycling and the computer hangs.

I have checked seagate for any firmware issues but it seems I have the most current drive - serial ST9750420AS

Hi,

I know your issue. The problem is that our mac (APPLE (MacBook Pro (DDR3) 15-inch (Aluminum Mid 2009) doesn't support SATA 3Gbs interface.
The drive you got:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hard-drives/
has only SATA 3Gbs interface. This was why my SSD drive didn't work.
I had return the drive to the shop and to buy a new drive which is SATA 1,5Gbs and 3Gbs.

I too am having trouble upgrading from my Momentus 500GB to a 750GB Momentus also purchased from OWC. With the drive installed into my 2010 MBP i7, the computer refuses to boot to any device. I've tried booting to the install CD by holding down C. Nothing. Tried it holding down option. The installation disk showed up, but once I clicked it, it just goes to the logo and sits there. Regardless of what I do, as long as this drive is installed, I only get an Apple logo.

I placed the MBP in target disk mode and plugged it into my old MacBook. It recognized the installation disk and the unformatted drive. I booted the MacBook up with the MBP still in target disk mode and did the installation of the OSX with the installation disk in the MacBook. I then used Disk Manager to format the 750 GB drive across the firewire connection and then installed OSX 10.6 to the 750 GB drive via firewire. Success! Until I tried to boot. Again, just the Apple logo and nothing more.

I removed the drive from my MBP and placed it in the MacBook. It boots right up. I removed the drive and put it back into the MBP. Same stupid logo and nothing more.

Reset PRAM. Reset whatever gets reset holding down CTRL, OPT, Shift and pressing power. Nothing.

Anyone? I've even tried jumpering the drive to limit it ot 1.5GBs. Nada.

I´ve just replaced my hard drive to a new one Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB Hybrid and I just can´t install the OSX in my new hard drive.
I´ve tried everything in the installation disk and didn´t work.
Everytime I tried to partition or erase the disk always comes out a message saying “input/outpu error”.
The funniest thing is that the system is recognizing the hard drive in the DU.
Please User uploaded file Is there anyone that can help me to solve this problem?

I have the exact same configuration and went through the same issue a few days ago.

Installing 10.5.x from original install disks worked just fine but no on the 10.6 upgrade. I removed the drive and placed in external dock, booted, and installed 10.6 without errors. Then I re-installed the drive internally and the machine booted normally. THIS IS NOT A FIX HOWEVER, as the machine freezes every 5 minutes. Neither lingon or hdapm workarounds seem to work.

So disappointed. Went to the Genius Bar and was told there was nothing "they" could do. Essentially, unless you install a drive from Apple rated only at 1.5gbs, there doesn't seem to be a legit fix that I can find.

Let me clear some misinformation up here. Hard drives for the unibody Macbook Pros are SATA II - that is 3Gbit/s. Most recent hard drives are now SATA III - or 6Gbits/s. SATA III drives are supposed to be backward compatible with SATA II. I have no idea what you might be doing with the jumper to throttle a drive down to 1.5 Gbit/s.

(Apologies for reviving this thread. I stumbled across it looking for answers to a related question and felt that this information needed to be set straight.

FWW I own one of these drives and find that it runs marvellously in my late 2008 MBP.)
