New iPad. No instructions. Help please.

Before I rant let me say, I am a 25 years plus Mac user and advocate.
OK. Now, I just bought an iPad for my sister (part of my ongoing effort to get others using Apple stuff).
I opened the box and found absolutely no instructions - and could not use it at all unless I connected it to a Mac and fired up iTunes.
Q #1: what if I didn't have a Mac (my sister does not).
I got home with it, connected it to my Powerbook G4 and...nothing.
Then I connected it to my Mac Pro and iTunes went to work. I was prompted to update iPod to 4.2.
Eventually it was done and ready but...
Q #2: do I unplug it like I would my iPod?
Q #3: how do I get music on the iPad? Do I use my Mac's iTunes to transfer?
Now here's the big one -
Q #4: Now what? There is no guided tour or anything to help understand how to use this. And in the time it takes me to turn to my Mac looking for help, the iPad screen goes black. I don't know what to do except hit the Home button since touching the screen does nothing. And then when I do that, I see a slider that says "slide to unlock." I figure this is a screen saver setting but I can't find any such thing. I'm in Settings now but not finding much help...AND how do I get out of Settings other than hitting the Home button?
And so on.
Q #5: Where in *&#! are instructions/guided tour/help for this great product?
Seriously, yes, I am pretty annoyed, especially since this is a gift for someone who has 25 years less experience than me.
Done ranting. I apologize but do need some help.

Mac Pro & Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Leopard runs on my G4 Powerbook!

iPad manuals are here:

http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad

They are also on the iPad, just open Safari, go to bookmarks and at the bottom is the iPad manual.

Aw, Jeez. You mean to tell me that the USB port is not really a USB port? I mean, after talking with my sister about what I consider to be deal breakers, she seems more at ease and willing to go ahead. Then she asked me if she can still print to her HP printer, and can she connect an external USB hard drive that has music, etc., on it. I (again, I assumed) said I was sure she could since the iPad has a USB port.
Wrong!??
So far, what I am reading is leading me to believe the USB port is not a fully functioning USB port. And as far as printing goes, I need Airprint and an Airprint capable printer, or I have to buy a dock connector.
Can anyone please clarify?
Can I use the USB port on the iPad to connect to a printer and/or an external hard drive?

Return it and let your sister go to the Apple Store and try a MacBook or MacBook Air and have a sales person, i.e. someone who really is knowledgeable, help her. You obviously, despite your 25 years, reading MacWorld, etc., are not that person. Otherwise just from reading the manual or looking at the iPad you would know that there is no USB port on the current iPad. There is a dock connector and you can get a Camera Connection Kit, but that will not connect to her external hard drive. (She doesn't have a computer but she has a USB external hard drive? How did she put music on it?).

So no, you cannot use the non-existent USB port on the iPad to connect to anything.

Take it back to Target and let her go buy a computer. Or do you even actually have one? Can I assume correctly you've never used an iPod or iPhone?

Like I said, I made the mistake of assuming (that it had video functionality and that it was, more or less, a stand-alone computer). Once I did that, it never occurred to me to look for certain specs. My focus was elsewhere. This is definitely a lesson learned. And thanks to all who commented and gave good direction.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad for assuming it had a camera, because at that price it should. And even the new ipod has one. My son's cheap little netbook has one. Somebody bought one for our son for Christmas and he loves it but, I was p!$$ed off to find I had to update from 10.4.11 (which came out in 4/05) to use it & the new ipod, while windows xp (which came out in 8/01) users were still compatible. That's sticking it us loyal apple users, pathetic.
also to print you need airprint and a HP printer not just any bluetooth compatible one.
