iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

I just got the iPhone 4 for Verizon last week and so far I love it, I have had a couple issues with texting though.

About half of the texts that I send to one particular friend come through to him as just boxes, and about half the texts I send to another friend come through to her with every other character being upside down question marks...

So far, it only happens with those two people and it only happens with about half of the texts i send, and there seems to be no consistency for a reason (no particular length, special characters, etc.; they are not even both using the same service). Sent and received messages look fine on my end.

Any idea of how to prevent this or fix it?

That is going to be a network problem, if the text does not look like that on your phone. Are they both on Verizon? If yes have them make sure the provisioning on their phones is up to date.

Hello all, I too had similar issues right after purchasing the iphone 4 recently. I tried to send regular txt messages, sms, to my wife's basic LG ENV phone and she was only receiving parts of the message with a lot of words missing and some words only had a couple letters of the word there, very confusing for her. I, however, was receiving all her txts just fine on my iPhone 4. I finally discovered that it was the insertion of the three periods (...) into my txts that was causing the whole issue. I removed all (...) from the same exact txts that were garbled before when sent to her and she was able to receive them completely fine without the three periods. I had heard that Apple has issues with sending special characters to some phones, basic phones especially, but I had no idea the three periods (...) were considered a special character. A verizon tech i spoke with suggested it might be an issue with trying to send more than 160 characters in the txt to a basic phone, but that is not the issue with my wifes phone as I sent more than 160 characters a couple of times to test it and they all worked fine after removing the (...), so it seems its not a character limit issue, at least for me. I also noticed that when I had inserted the (...) into the original txt message, I noticed my character counter went from 195/160 or whatever the current number I was typing on the first part was, suddenly went to 195/70. I thought the change from 160 to 70 on the last part was odd and it appears that was a good indication that something was wrong. But like I said, as soon as I deleted all the (...) from the text the character counter went back to normal, 195/160. Hope I've helped some others having these issues. My suggestion is to never use any special characters in your txts to anyone, smartphone users or otherwise, seems like it just causes problems, especially when sending to a basic phone.

This has not been solved by Virgin, as of today - Sept 6 2012. My original complaint to Virgin was August 17, 2012. I've spent 14 hours on phone over 10 phone calls. Written and responded to 7 emails - some from their senior staff. I have been asked the same set of questions 6 times.

I cannot sent SMS text messsages. MMS works fine. I can receive SMS and MMS.

Virgin support keeps sending me text messages from phone 0000000868. Message is $VMU$. My repeated requests to not send a text message (that I can't read) are ignored.

Calling techs at 1.866.553.9807 and receiving no support at all. Have spoken with senior tech support and they cannot debug. Calling the number on their website is a farce.

I called again today and got to start all over again with first tier customer support asking same questions - did it ever work, how many bars, etc.

I am stuck with this ludicrous service, but I'd suggest you return your phone immediately if you can. I've been a Virgin customer with no problems for 10 years, but this will be the last phone. When it dies, it's done.

Can't Receive Text Replies:

I have a few friends who are using AT&T, Tmobile and other carriers who say they receive

"all" my text and reply but I cannot receive theirs. My first call to Sprint the rep told me

to turn the phone off for 30 seconds and they would send a refresh signal and try it again.

It didn't work.

I called back and they did the usual trouble shooting as before and concluded that it was

a problem with my friends phone. They took it to T-mobile Store and the tech found nothing

wrong with their phone or network and said it was a Sprint issue.

I will call back today for a 3rd time and if not resolved I will give them back the phone.😠

Having the same issue as well. I am a verizon customer and i have had the iphone 4 since it came out on verizon. No trouble up until a few months ago. i send thousands of text messages a month and my friend on at&t doesn't get my messages or gets two to three words from every message i sent. It makes conversations really frustrating and there are times i don't get messages that my friend on at&t sends me either and he doesn't get mine either. For every message i send, i end up having to take a screen shot of the messages i send. I also had a problem where i sent a message on a saturday and my friend got the message next week on a thursday. It took 6 days for the message to finally go through??? really???!!! And there are times when i'm sending a message and it looks fine on my screen and when the person on the other end gets it..it combines the message i just sent with another message that i had probably sent him a month ago and combines them into one single text and makes conversations utterly confusing ..I am hoping apple and verizon both look at this issue or i will be forced to leave my two favorite phone/service providers!

I am abandoning txt and sms altogether and going to "whatsapp," so far is a free service and messages come in without a glitch!

You can abandon SMS (it's the same thing as text) if you want. However, Whatsapp will only work with other people who have Whatsapp. You may still need to text people who can't use it (people with basic phones) or people who don't want to use it.

Best of luck.
