iPhone 4 and Microsoft Outlook

I just bought the iPhone4. The email I set up and sync with is Microsoft Outlook. When I had the phone out with me yesterday I tried to send an email but it would not send. My understanding is that the iPhone4 does not need connection to wifi if you are on a data plan. Am I doing something wrong; is MO not compatible?

Thank you.

You do not need a WiFi connection to send or receive email, but the account must be set up correctly on the phone. If you set it to sync with Outlook and then synced the phone it should transfer your mail settings to the phone, but it doesn't always get them right, especially if your email provider requires different settings if you are connected to their network or on a public connection..

If you open the email app do you see the email account you use with Outlook?

Is the email account with an Exchange server (usually corporate), or with a POP3 or IMAP mail server (usually an ISP account).

If it's IMAP or POP3 and you are receiving email, then the problem is the Outgoing mail server settings on the phone (called "SMTP" settings). you should go to your ISP's web site to find out what SMTP settings to use when off-network.

Hi Lawrence. Again thank you for taking the time to respond. I called the cell phone provider last week and after 30-40 minutes on the phone with him he made some setting changes to the incoming and outgoing mail systems. I'm still having "push" issues though because the emails on my computer (Microsoft Outlook) are not pushing onto the iPhone. They are however still syncing onto my iPod Touch. I may have to phone the ISP but I was wondering if I should change the email settings on my iPhone to replicate the iPod Touch? This might not work though because the Touch is not a phone and I have two separate providers for cable and cell phone. What would you suggest? Thank you.

Eureka! OK that worked like magic (and I did take a note of the previous one). The next test will be away from my home wifi network and onto the Telus 3G network outside and if that works then we are all set. I really do appreciate this amazing service you provide Lawrence, thank you very, very much. This was the only thing I could not get working satisfactorily and after spending so much time it was frustrating. I think you have solved it!

Cheers!
