Subtitles in Apple Tv 2

I look for the movie and download it. I Merge it with the subtitles using submerge. I convert it to a file suitable for iTunes (mov), drag it, and I can watch it in my Macbook with the subtitles, but when playing in the Apple Tv 2 the subtitles don't appear. Where is the problem?? Is there anything I have fogotten in the settings of my Apple Tv??

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Thanks for mentioning this, Steve. I've been going nuts trying to get closed captions on TV shows, partly because of mild hearing loss, partly because I don't yet have a sound system attached to my TV, and partly because I watch a lot of foreign shows. I purchased last year's season of Doctor Who and it's often quite the struggle to follow what's happening. Anyhow, at least I know not to worry that I'm missing something in my setup.

I have a more elegant solution than those who are remuxing or converting movies to hard-code subtitles. I bought the app Beamer which will shoot any content over to the Apple TV that you drop on it... even formats the iTunes/Apple TV doesn't use. If you have a subtitle file (.src .sub. idx, etc) in the same folder as the movie file and with the same name as the movie file, they will appear. I see no reason this would not work with iTunes rentals or purchases, as long as you track the movie file down in the Finder. Good luck!

Actually @Erroll, that's really not the point of Beamer. It is for all of the things that your iTunes library doesn't like or won't play. If you have an Apple TV and iTunes, you are already all set to play the DRM protected movies. And if those don't have subtitles baked in... then nothing's going to bail you out of that predicament!

Whether it's the point of Beamer or not, it's what the previous poster suggesed doing, so I tried it, and reporetd back that it doesn't work.

As far as subtitled content goes, I find it appalling that a company with Apple's resources discriminates against the hearing impaired the way it does. The number of TV shows with CC is pitiful. However, contrary to what you suggest above, some research and purchasing a couple of pieces of software, has bailed me out.

@Sharon Goodman et al.: Sharon - thanks for your detailed description of how to manually convert uppercase captions to mixed (UC & LC). I'm wondering if anyone on this thread has tried using something like AppleScript to automate the process?

If it's routine and tedious then it should be possible to create a recipe (script - algorithm) to do perhaps 80% of mind-numbing stuff, then you could focus on fine-tuning the cations "by hand".

Has anyone tried this?

I am also hearing-disabled and appreciate captions, although I can understand 75% of most vocals using headphones with a (hearing-aid) telecoil pickup. I've held-off getting Apple TV precisely because a lot of the iTunes store movies come without CC. But I'm strongly motivated to dump my CATV - costs a small fortune every month - and try a digital broadcast antenna. I've read that, depending on where you live, digital signal selections will give you the essentials (news, etc) with a picture that is typically better than CATV.

I just DL'd the Harry Potter movies so that I could watch with my grandchildren, but to my dismay I am unable to make the CC work. This is so dissapointing, because I have hearing loss from construction noise and the dialog is almost undetectable to me. I have tried all the fixes listed on the forum, but when I click the CC symbol all I get are the Chapters choice. Why in the world aren't CC available for this wildly popular series?

Thank you SO much for this tip. I've had an appletv2 for over two years and never knew about the center button feature to enable subtitles. I had turned subtitles on in the Settings section of atv2 but they never worked. My only workaround was to plug my laptop into the HDMI port and have subtitles enabled directly on the Netflix site for the show I was watching. They would then by mirrored onto the television screen. Thanks for this very easy method to turn subtitles on or off on each individual film or show directly on the appletv2!!!

(See Mart19's post regarding pressing and holding center button on atv2 remote while watching the film or show. A menu pops up allowing you to enable subtitles.)

General Question...why does it take me 27 clicks to go from a TV show to adding subtitles?

Can't Apple give us a shortcut? Does anyone have a universal remote that can click on subtitles with just a couple of clicks? If so what brand please!

The whole thing is silly...click once to pause program...again to go to program description...again to go to series header...again to get to the main Apple TV screen...5 more clicks to reach Settings...another 5 to get down to Audio and Video...another click to find Subtitles...another click to change to English...and then another 7-8 clicks to get back to your original program.

Does anyone else find this irritating and inefficient???

People.....Does not matter if you can or can not turn on subtitles. If the movie you rented or purchased (Restrepo) does not SUPPORT SUBTITLES, you can not get around it unless you go WAY out of your way and spend WAY too much time trying to hack your way into it working. This is absolute Bull $#!% and Apple better give me my money back for the movie I rented. Do any of you wonder why Apple has all the money in the world, and its impossible to get anything to work correctly without pulling all your teeth out? Its not an accident I can promise you. Apple is part of illuminati anyway, don't know why anybody would buy anything Apple related......
