A Sanyo Xacti VPC HD2000 icon: What does it mean?

I cannot find the answer to this question in my Sanyo Xacti VPC HD2000A camcorder manual.

On the left side of the Display, there is a white icon shaped like a U and filled up. Imagine the capital letter U filled with white milk. To the left of that icon I see two tiny little icons lined up vertically. The top icon looks like it could be a white arrow sign pointing downwards. The bottom icon looks like a white cross.

What does that mean? I do not recall seeing that icon previously. It might be the result of me experimenting with my Xacti. My manual does not explain it.

Hi Zyfert...

Well thank you for finding that for me! The question then becomes: Is it a good idea to click that cosmetic filter on? If I do not click on that cosmetic filter, what happens? Certain unwanted things happen to the subject, such as shadows, etc? Yes, I realize that shadows are supposed to be corrected by the flash, but this is just an example.

At any rate, I have a suspicion that most people here would opt for the "No," so that is what I am going to do right now.

Zyfert, you and the others are incredibly helpful.
And I am still slightly scared of that topic we were all working on the other day -- about getting the frame to stop at just the precise moment that i want it to stop. I have more of those posts to read and try to understand.

Thanks, you can click solved now then, lol.
This is all what it says about the cosmetic filter:
"Skin tones are enhanced in close-up shots (cosmetic filter)".
I personally have never used it.
As far as editing goes, mine is never that precise however this is how I would do it:
Swap your project into the bottom window and click on the 3 buttons for a single timeline.
Drag the slider all the way to the right.
Now just moving your cursor along the clip you'll see the vertical red line (playhead).
When you get to the point where you want to make your cut, let go of your mouse or trackpad and use the right/left arrows to advance or retard just one frame at a time until you find the 'exact spot'.
See how you go,
best, Z.

Zyfert, thanks once more. Also: How on earth did you track down what the Cosmetics filter does? I'm using the thick little Sanyo VPC-HD2000A camcorder manual with several paper clips stuck in important pages. To keep the dang thing open I am using a big wide red clip, and I notice that the writers of the manual have you going back and forth to different pages. This was my experience in checking on my Time and Date stamp.

I Googled Sanyo VPC-HD2000A camcorder MANUAL just to make it easier to look information up, but I couldn't find one. I did for my Canon digital camera, but not for this Xacti.

Anyhow, thank you again for the info you have shared with me. I appreciate it.

I have an HD1000 and I remembered something vaguely similar.
To get a PDF manual for yours, follow this link:
http://www.us.sanyo.com/dynamic/product/Downloads/VPC-HD2000OMEnglish-22461086.pdf
However your HD 2000 manual has less information than mine which has this about filters:
FILTERS
The filter feature changes image characteristics such as color tones, to apply
unique effects to the photographed image.
1 Display the NORMAL Mode Shooting Menu (page 49), select
“FILTER”, and press the SET button.
2 Select the desired icon, and press the SET button.
h This completes the filter setting.
h To return to normal photography, select & from the filter menu, and
press the SET button.
HINT
i A table showing the limitations for settings corresponding to filter icons
other than & is on page 209.
&: No filter is used (none).
%: Skin tones are enhanced in close-up shots (cosmetic filter).
W: Snap black-and-white photos (monochrome filter).
,: Create a sepia-tone photo (sepia filter).
I am curious whether you 'got' the exact point editing.
Best, Z.

Zyfert,

Thank you ever again. I just now downloaded the manual for my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A camcorder. It will be so much easier to look for information.

As for the other items: (1) getting a still out of a clip, and (2) stopping the action right at a certain point, Zyfert, the other day it was slightly breathtaking to see the different explanations and suggestions and then to realize that some of it was going about a foot over my brains.

I have downloaded Streamclip and also that other app, Square5.

I have to look at all the posts again and get them straight while looking at my iMovie '11 program.

One thing: the issue of the blast of pictures (stills) as being a possible solution is great, but in my case, the situation is at the point of editing in iMovie '11, not when I am shooting with my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A. 🙂 (Someone had mentioned the virtue of the rapid fire succession of still shots.)

I have explored my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A quite a bit. I made some changes tonight -- small things like having the date and time show up in the display when I open it. I had some questions about those kinds of issues/options and will post them later.

Right now I am mainly wanting to thank you again, Z,
