I'm looking for a path to use QT Pro on a machine running OS X 10.6.7. I've found some confusing (to me, anyway) anomalies. At
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
It sayeth:
<< QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3
About QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3
QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files on Snow Leopard. It also accepts QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes, which turn on QuickTime Pro functions.
QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

Summary
Mac OS X v10.6 includes QuickTime X that includes a new QuickTime Player, a clean and uncluttered interface, easy media sharing, and flexible recording capabilities. A Mac OS X v10.6-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is also available.
Products Affected

Should you need it, a Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is also available for use with older media or with existing AppleScript-based workflows. QuickTime Player 7 can be used to playback formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime Movies, and MIDI files. Additional Information
Information for QuickTime 7 Pro users:
If you have a QuickTime 7 Pro registration code on your computer, QuickTime Player 7 is automatically installed in your Utilities folder during the Mac OS X v10.6 installation process. QuickTime Player 7 recognizes your valid registration code and enables QuickTime Pro functionality.
Note: QuickTime X does not use QuickTime Pro registration codes.
If you need to manually enter your QuickTime 7 Pro registration code:
Open QuickTime Player 7.
Click the QuickTime Player 7 menu and choose Registration.>>
So what's the deal, or does it not matter: Is it preferred to do the QT7 install from the OS X 10.6.x install disk, or DL QuickTime Player 7.6.6 from Apple support?
Do both paths allow you to upgrade to QT Pro?
Why -- if I may ask -- this seemingly retrograde (is it?) installation of QT7, when QT 10.0 is what's on my iMac running OS X 10.6.7? Also, when we're talking QuickTime and QuickTime Player, are we talking about the same thing? If so, it would be nice to agree on a standardized nomenclature.
I must also say I find it confusing that Article: HT3678 (
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678) "Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard" [from the OS X 10.6.x Install disk] was posted May 06, 2010, while download 923, "QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3" (
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923) was posted just 4 days later, on May 10, 2010. Which is right -- one. both, neither?
ONE MORE POINT: Somehow, I've gotten a NON-Intel QuickTime pref ("You can’t open QuickTime preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.") in the "Other pane of my System Preferences window. Can someone tell me how to get rid of it, please?
Please help me figure this one out.
Thanks for all you do
