The MacBook Pro came with Quicktime X

Actually, it comes with both, but version 7 is not installed by default. It can be installed from the second gray disk the Mac came with, or as Niel gave you a link for above, downloaded.

Quicktime X is not Quicktime Pro compatible.

That is correct.

Why is it not possible to add pro features to the latest Quicktime app. It is odd that you have to load an old version in order to have pro features.

Yes, it is odd. I've only heard/read, that QuickTime X is still in development. It's still supposedly missing some functionality of QuickTime 7. It therefore just isn't ready to fully replace QT7.

I have a brand new 15" 2.2 Intel cor i7 macbook. Lovely.
It's only got QT Player installed: and I can't find a way to install the Pro key that I bought.
I downloaded QT from the Apple site - and it says it needs 700GB!! User uploaded file Obviously, this ain't gonna work.
Why do I have a QT system that is player only (or is that just the name)? and that I can't upgrade to Pro?
sheesh!

thanks in advance...

Not sure what's going on there, but you don't need to download anything. You only need to make sure you've installed QuickTime 7 from the OS X installation disks.

That's normal for everyone. The player and the pro version are one and the same. It's just a matter of entering your key to upgrade the player to pro.

I can't upgrade to Pro

Go into the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and launch QuickTime 7. Ignore the default video that pops up. Close that window if you want without shutting down QT7. Go to the menu bar and choose QuickTime Player 7 > Registration. Enter your pro key exactly as it is listed in your email confirmation.

I'm looking for a path to use QT Pro on a machine running OS X 10.6.7. I've found some confusing (to me, anyway) anomalies. At

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923

It sayeth:

<< QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3

About QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3
QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files on Snow Leopard. It also accepts QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes, which turn on QuickTime Pro functions.

QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

For more information, see: <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678.>>

However, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678 readeth thusly:

<<Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard
Last Modified: May 06, 2010
Article: HT3678

Summary
Mac OS X v10.6 includes QuickTime X that includes a new QuickTime Player, a clean and uncluttered interface, easy media sharing, and flexible recording capabilities. A Mac OS X v10.6-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is also available.

Products Affected
QuickTime 7 (OS X), Mac OS X 10.6
Should you need it, a Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is also available for use with older media or with existing AppleScript-based workflows. QuickTime Player 7 can be used to playback formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime Movies, and MIDI files. Also, it supports QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes for access to QuickTime Pro functionality.

To install the QuickTime Player 7 from the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD:

Insert your Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD.
Open the Optional Installs folder and double-click "Optional Installs.mpkg".
Select the QuickTime 7 option and click Continue.
QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in your Utilities folder.
Note: If you double-click any media that requires QuickTime Player 7 for playback and it is not already installed, you will be asked if you want to download it from Apple.

Additional Information
Information for QuickTime 7 Pro users:

If you have a QuickTime 7 Pro registration code on your computer, QuickTime Player 7 is automatically installed in your Utilities folder during the Mac OS X v10.6 installation process. QuickTime Player 7 recognizes your valid registration code and enables QuickTime Pro functionality.

Note: QuickTime X does not use QuickTime Pro registration codes.

If you need to manually enter your QuickTime 7 Pro registration code:
Open QuickTime Player 7.
Click the QuickTime Player 7 menu and choose Registration.>>

So what's the deal, or does it not matter: Is it preferred to do the QT7 install from the OS X 10.6.x install disk, or DL QuickTime Player 7.6.6 from Apple support?

Do both paths allow you to upgrade to QT Pro?

Why -- if I may ask -- this seemingly retrograde (is it?) installation of QT7, when QT 10.0 is what's on my iMac running OS X 10.6.7? Also, when we're talking QuickTime and QuickTime Player, are we talking about the same thing? If so, it would be nice to agree on a standardized nomenclature.

I must also say I find it confusing that Article: HT3678 ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678) "Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard" [from the OS X 10.6.x Install disk] was posted May 06, 2010, while download 923, "QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3" ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923) was posted just 4 days later, on May 10, 2010. Which is right -- one. both, neither?

ONE MORE POINT: Somehow, I've gotten a NON-Intel QuickTime pref ("You can’t open QuickTime preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.") in the "Other pane of my System Preferences window. Can someone tell me how to get rid of it, please?

Please help me figure this one out.

Thanks for all you do

Bart Brown
