Disable iTunes Autoplay After Importing a Song

Every time I drag and drop a song into iTunes to import it, it automatically plays the songs. Is there any way to disable this feature? All I want to do is import the song, not have it play after importing.

I know there were preferences to enable/disable this option is previous iTunes versions, but I have searched far and wide for a way to disable it and the few methods I found all seem to ENABLE it (which is seems to already be the default setting for me). Any way to turn this feature OFF?

I know this is also a lame quick fix but if you press the pause button on the keyboard the music stops playing. The catch is that you have to wait until enough memory resources are available to support the task... I have 10GB of Ram and it takes a few minutes to stop the music playing while importing(and to execute all of the buttons it records me pressing while I'm frantically trying to get it to stop). I agree with everyone that has posted. It is a stupid issue that stresses out customers that can very easily taken care of by apple but they refuse to listen to the thousands. It's been 4 years now and ZERO HELP from apple on this as far as I can see. I wish Apple would contact me for a resolution. I'm a DJ and this has screwed me over many times while trying to do my job! Serato works hand in hand with iTunes so I know what I'm talking about.

Worked for me. Thanks.

Apple is something else. This megacorporation could easily have people scan Mac forums for feedback and patch problems. Apple gear is so expensive but isn't well maintained and upgraded.

E.g.: My music playlists disappeared about a year ago upon an iTunes 'upgrade.' Such a huge job to redo these playlists even though I had made a backup for almost everything.

This is only indirectly associated with Safari, in that if Safari is set to "Open safe files after downloading," it will do just that, based on the Finder settings for the extension of the file concerned. For most people, Finder is set to open mp3 files with iTunes, so that is what Safari does: Safari is obeying your instructions. Disabling this feature means that files with other extensions, which you might well want opened with default applications, will simply sit there, doing nothing. So don't cancel this option, unless you are willing to open every type of downloaded file manually.

What needs to be changed, then, is the default application to open mp3 files. The current application (usually iTunes) can best be found by selecting any mp3 file and opening the Info window for that file with Finder menu item File>Get Info or Cmd-i.

Look down the Info window and find the section "Open with:" (if the little triangle preceding these words is pointing to the right, click on it to expand the section). Here you will see a drop-down, probably currently populated with iTunes; when expanded, the drop-down shows other apps capable of being used for that type of file. One would also expect to find an option such as "Do nothing" or "None." Sadly, this is not provided: one is forced to pick an application and that is what is causing the problem.

There is a solution, however, in the form of a System extension that provides just the "Do nothing" option that is required: RCDefaultApp(it's free).

Although this extension looks old, I have used it successfully with El Capitan.

Hopefully, a future update to OS X will provide its own "Do nothing" option.
