Macbook Pro (2010) 16gb memory

Ok, I tried searching but couldn't find anything, so if I have missed it please feel free to point me in the direction of a previous post...

My problem is that I do a lot of heavy software development and I need to be mobile and as much as I love my Macbook Pro, 8GB main memory is nowhere near enough for what I need, especially with how poor the OS inappropriately blocks inactive memory. I know I can buy 8GB memory chips from Crucial to give me 16GB, and I know it may even void my warranty (but I have no choice on that front). But before I part with the cash, can I ask if anyone actually tried to put 16GB of memory into a MacBook Pro and if so does it work or am I wasting my money?

Many thanks in advance

MacBook Pro, iMac, Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Hello marcelodamon

Do you think my macbook will work with this ram stick 16.0GB (8.0GB + 8.0GB) OWC PC8500 DDR3 1066MHz SO-DIMM 204 Pin kit? Please help with this matter since I recently upgraded from 4gb and currently no issues with this new 8gb memory, I tried installing the 16gb Cosair ram sticks but kept shutting down and having kernal errors since it was at 1333ghz. I greatly appeciate it!

Hello Marceldamon,

I attempted installing the OWC 16GB memory kit into my 17Inch Macbook Pro (6,1) Mid 2010 laptop running OS X El Capitan with no success last night. I even reset the PRAM as you described in your post. Can you tell us:

1. If your 17inch MacBook Pro is the 6,1 version?

2. if not what version is it?

3. What exact process you used to stop the kernel panics?

4. Is Auto-Switching enabled for the video cards in the "Energy-Saver" System Preferences module.

Thanks!

To be clear, 13 inch MacBook Pros have been verified and confirmed to work with full function using the 16GB RAM kit from OWC. This has been covered and reiterated frequently earlier in this forum.

The only questions that remain are in regards to the following models:

1. 17 inch MacBook Pro model 6,1 Mid 2010

2. 15 inch MacBook Pro model 6,2 amid 2010

if you have either one of these models listed above many on this forum would love to know how you got it work. Please include details such as make and type of ram installed, any issues encountered and the steps you took to resolve them.

Regards

This thread is looooong.

I haven't noticed anyone mention the 2010 15" Quality program. MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video Quality Program has ended - Apple Support

I wonder is there a limitation in the firmware on this and the 17" models due to that program. Graphic switching was where that issue was as I recall and required a logic board swap out to resolve

OCW already confirmed a firmware update unlocked (inadvertently) the limitations on the 13" model and we know that Linux can run on the 15" so something in OSX and unlikely Apple is going to make it happen.

I'm gonna settle for 8 in this situation as I cannot be arsed trying to mod firmware to get this to work but I hope someone cracks it.
