Macbook Pro (2010) 16gb memory

Ok, I tried searching but couldn't find anything, so if I have missed it please feel free to point me in the direction of a previous post...

My problem is that I do a lot of heavy software development and I need to be mobile and as much as I love my Macbook Pro, 8GB main memory is nowhere near enough for what I need, especially with how poor the OS inappropriately blocks inactive memory. I know I can buy 8GB memory chips from Crucial to give me 16GB, and I know it may even void my warranty (but I have no choice on that front). But before I part with the cash, can I ask if anyone actually tried to put 16GB of memory into a MacBook Pro and if so does it work or am I wasting my money?

Many thanks in advance

Will this void my AppleCare plan? I read lots of article on this new MBP 2011 capabilities on 16GB RAM, but I'm concern about warranty, since this is not yet supported by Apple. Although, it seams to be a possibility if Apple refresh the MBP line and add more RAM as optional (the 8GB sticks are been made by several manufactors now). Any imput will be appreciate.

Thanks,

M

Not sure about the warranty, this might help: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2804035?start=0&tstart=0

You can get crucial 16gb ram for just $180, which I'm considering doing.

To deal with inactive memory, you can create an automator app that runs the 'purge' terminal command (needs Xcode). Among other things, this will clear up inactive memory, although it temporarily slows things down (for like a minute).

Well actually if you have a 2010 Core i5 or i7 MBP it looks possible...

I live in Calgary and By everything from Memory Express (A couple stores are located here) anyway I have corsair ram in my MBP right now and it works like a dream mind you its a Core 2 Duo and I only have 8GB, so i can't tell you this will work for sure and I could only find 16gb of pc3-10666 on memory express but I'm sure you can order from the manufacturer. I would also like to think that even if OS X didn't support 16gb of ram surely you could through windows boot camp.

Use "purge" to clear out the disk cache. This has the nice side effect of releasing most of the inactive memory. I recently discovered it and has saved me from having to reboot after Mac OS refuses to release the inactive memory.

It is included in Lion, and not sure about Snow Leopard, you might need the Developer Tools.

purge(8) BSD System Manager's Manual purge(8)

NAME

purge -- force disk cache to be purged (flushed and emptied)

SYNOPSIS

purge

DESCRIPTION

Purge can be used to approximate initial boot conditions with a cold disk

buffer cache for performance analysis. It does not affect anonymous memory

that has been allocated through malloc, vm_allocate, etc.

I have 16GB of RAM in my 2011 Macbook pro and it works beautifully. I'm not sure about the Apple Care, but I'm willing to take the chance. Memory is a pretty safe upgrade and it either works or it doesn't. I do dev work and spend the majority of my time on the mac side, so I didn't want to give all my resources to my VM's and limit or slow down the mac side of things.
