Macbook Pro (2010) 16gb memory

Ok, I tried searching but couldn't find anything, so if I have missed it please feel free to point me in the direction of a previous post...

My problem is that I do a lot of heavy software development and I need to be mobile and as much as I love my Macbook Pro, 8GB main memory is nowhere near enough for what I need, especially with how poor the OS inappropriately blocks inactive memory. I know I can buy 8GB memory chips from Crucial to give me 16GB, and I know it may even void my warranty (but I have no choice on that front). But before I part with the cash, can I ask if anyone actually tried to put 16GB of memory into a MacBook Pro and if so does it work or am I wasting my money?

Many thanks in advance

MacBook Pro, iMac, Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

A good deal of the information in this thread was correct when posted but is now incorrect. This is one of the good reasons not to dredge up ancient threads and move them back to the front page again.

I have a mid 2010 MBP unibody.

I put 2 x 8GB RAM into it and here is what follows;

1. Boot up, MacOS (Leopard) opens and sees 16GB RAM

2. Start working, everything is fine.

3. About 5mins later, MacOS says an error has occured and it needs to reboot.

4. I reboot, goes back into MacOS...

5. Process is repeated...

6. On about the 3rd Reboot, BIOS wont POST and says an error occured in some EFI software thing.

7. Remove the 8GB, leave 8GB in

8. Power up and it works 100%

So, my thought on this is that its less of a "hardware cant do it" and more of a "BIOS and MacOS have some intergral flaws, be it on purpose or not, that doesnt support the 16GB

Interestingly this Core i5 on other laptop brands works with up to 16GB with supported BIOS upgrades.
