hp Officejet 4500 not scanning

Bought hp OfficeJet 4500 all-in-one about 3 weeks ago. Just now got around to trying scanner and my MacBook Pro cannot find it. HP support had me uninstall and reinstall the hp software, and then said I needed TWAIN in my applications and it should have been part of the Snow Leopard install.
Is that true? If not, is there some other kind of way to get the scanner part of this thing to work? The darn thing is brand new, and I can't afford to go buy another one!

I had the same problem where it would not print. I have 10.6.7 Installed. I installed the driver from the disc. Then I uninstalled the HP drivers, and installed the Apple HP Drivers version 2.7. The print and fax are working fine.

But I cannot add the scanner. How do I get ths to work. I have tried to add the scanner in System Prefernces > Print and Scan. But I do not see a scan option. I have tried to use Image Capture but the HP Scanner device does not show up.

Any ideas?

I eventually found a solution from my side.

I found out that one of the USB ports was faulty. The logicboard had to be replaced on the unit. Luckily it was still under warranty.

After the logcboard was replaced, I reinstalled the drivers and now all works.

I know this might not help, but this is how it was solved for me.

All the best.
