This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support

Editing Error: This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format.

I have been having this issue when trying to open photos in CS4. It only seems to be affecting images from the last year or so, although I'm using the same cameras (Canon 7D, 5D, and S90) as before. My library is large, going back to year 2000, and all the older images seem to work fine, but most all of the recent files display this error when trying to open them is CS4. I've tried the methods described in other threads and on the support website, namely starting aperture while holding option and command, pulling up the options to rebuild the library in various ways. I've done all three options, the last two twice, with no change. This is very frustrating to not be able to use the program in the way I had planned... Any ideas? I'm wondering if my library is simply too large- although I'm not sure if breaking the library into smaller chunks is the best way to go. I prefer having all my photos together. I have found that iMovie fails to operate properly when events get too large. Is this a similar problem?

OK -- after a false start because Safari opened the file as a binary and not an image file, I put the link into Firefox, which warned that it was a binary, and only offered the option to download it, which I did.

I then imported it into Aperture from the Downloads folder as a RAW file, it rendered and displayed AOK, and when I selected to send it to PS CS5 as the external editor, it did so without a hitch. Created a TIFF version, sent it to Photoshop, and all is well with the process.

Not sure if your process to put it on your server changed something or not? But I can't reproduce the problem with this file.

I recently upgraded to PSE 10 from PSE 9. When sending some images to PSE 10 from AP3, I get the error "This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format." The images affected were taken with a Tokina 11-16mm lens.

I went back to some images made with that lens sent to PSE 9 two weeks ago. When exporting to PSE 10, the error "This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format." occured.

I changed the "chosen" editor back to PSE 9 and the images transferred successfully.

Maybe this is an Adobe problem?

It's been a while since this post was started but I may have some info.

I think I may have stumbled upon a culprit for this issue. I ran into this error for the first time and did some internet search. No immediate solution but one person suggested ejecting and remounting the external disk onto which the masters were stored. I tried to do that but the Finder would not let me because “A program was using that disk”. Since no app was open I realized that I have CrashPlan backup and it was running in the background at the time. I stopped it and tried my “Edit w/ Photoshop” option and it worked… for the first photo.

For the second one, however Aperture got stuck on the “rendering for Photoshop use” dialog box. I had to Force Quit it. Then, as I tried to do a Repair Permissions I noticed that my last import had actually filled up my external drive. So Aperture did not have any room to write the temp tiff file and was just spinning its wheels. This is a poor behavior by A3. It should display an error msg when a disk is full.

Bottom line, if you get that dreaded error message, check to see if a background app such as CrashPlan or another one is running. Turn it off and try it. Then also check to make sure there is plenty of room on the drive that hosts your masters.

Ok guys, I have had this same problem. Aperture reports that it does not support the image file you are trying to export to an external editor.

The culprit for me was that the hard drive where the original image is stored is running low on memory. I cleaned up the hard drive by removing a lot of stuff that I didn't need and the file was then able to export to PS, CS6 and all of my other external editors with no problem.

If you get the error memory that Aperture does not support the image file, try freeing up some memory on that drive. It worked for me and I haven't had that error message come up again.
