24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

Wow this fix is such a tease for me and I am very angry. As I write, as if to reinforce this, my 24 inch display keeps 'shaking' or momentarily going to black. I have an early 2011 macbook pro and the 24 inch AND YET when I try to install the fix it says that my computer doesn't need it.

Oh I see everything is alright is it? No its not as I have a monitor that I paid a not at all cheap £700 ($1200) for not three years ago that keeps flickering. And I am supposed to lug it to an Apple store where there isn't even one anywhere near the city where I live.

Talk about a tease and a kick in the teeth. I am very very wary of Apple and their serious lack of 'care' and the expectation that the lifetime of a piece of equipment (for hooking up to other equipment) is as fleeting as the blink of an eye.

Grrrrrrr

Just a thought but if you go to Applications - utilities do you see near the top of the list "24 inch LED Cinema firmware updaet"...... the first time the dmg is launched it installs this program .... then supposed to autolaunch it. Maybe yours didn't go the first time. Try launching it from utilities if it is there... not the original dmg.....

Hi Lee, good thought but there is no file installed in utilities. I tried closing the lid (though the trackpad stops working) and then using my wacom tablet, but I get the same message saying "your computer does not need this update"...

...Obviously I beg to differ that I don't at least need 'an' update. I did install an update that was released a few months ago that was supposed to fix flickering. I wonder if this is just a rerelease of that fix?

In any event my excedingly annoying, though at least sporadic, flickering goes on and on and on and on...

Cheers

Aha, I never thought about the USB thing. I completely left it unplugged. So I plugged the USB in et voila the update started. It then started loading the firmware update to the monitor and now hopefully I am without flicker. So far so good (after 10 minutes) I have no flicker. I'll be back on this thread if I do, but hopefully this has worked a treat!

Many thanks for the help and that extra USB step...

Cheers

Okay I'm a dummy. I said a few post ago that the 24 inch ACD firmware would not install on my 2011 17 inch Macbook Pro. I tried to install the 24 inch Cinema Firmware update again but this time while my 2011 Macbook Pro is CONNECTED to my 24 ACD and it installed successfully. Duh!!!

I'm not poping the Champaine yet but it has been two days now and so far the flickers and blackout are gone. I'll will keep using my 24 ACD to make sure this is a permanent thing. But so far so good!

I've sent a mail to Tim Cook email address to express my concern on the download being pulled, and I got contacted by an AppleCare representative who gave me the official link to the support page with the official link to the firmware update.

Here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4045?viewlocale=en_US

So contrary to what we thought, Apple didn't pull the update at all, it just make it official.

Nevertheless, I suggested to the representative to add an entry on the Downloads section of the support website to make the KB article more visible and easier to find.

This weekend I again contacted my case administrator (Apple Senior Advisor) for a note on the update of last week and it being pulled. Today he replied to me with the same link iFrodo was given.

Needless to say I went ahead and installed the firmware update. Will post back in a week at max to give a status update. Hope we all catch a break with this one.

I was lucky enough to see the posted link and download it before it was pulled. I installed it, and have now used it for four full days, and can say for sure, the flicker problem is gone. At last.

However, I want to throw my comments behind all that has been said on here about the disgraceful way Apple has handled this. They simply didn't care. This update should have been released months ago, as soon as it transpired that there was a problem. The disdain with which I was treated on my several calls to Applecare has forever changed my perception of Apple as a company. Luckily for them, there's no credible alternative for my business. That is almost a shame, as it seems to be breeding an attitude within Apple that it can treat its customers however the **** it likes.

Been over a week now and I'm pleased to say flicker and blackout problems are indeed gone with the firmware update. Thanks to all who posted in this thread for the past several months trying to resolve the issue at hand.

One minor bug I have noticed though: the volume on my ACD somehow doesn't remember its setting from before sleep mode when the laptop is awakened from sleep while in clamshell mode. One tap on a volume control button on my keyboard and then it does remember though. Bit peculiar.

Anyway, thanks again.

My issue was not with a Thunderbolt mac. It was with an older Mac Pro 2x266 with a mini dvi display adapter. I used my Thunderbolt equipped Mac Book Pro to update the monitor, and am extremely happy to report that at least so far, no flickers on the monitor while connected to the Mac Pro. Thanks to everyone for sticking with this. It is now a pleasure to use my Mac again.

Thanks to Apple for sticking with it, but I wish you would have been a little more upfront with us. "We know there is a problem and it appears to be monitor firmware related. We don't have an answer right now, but will stick with it until we do and let you know. Have patience." would have been a perfectly acceptable answer.

Telling me to "revert the OS to 10.0 and apply one update at a time until it starts to flicker again, then let us know when it breaks down" is not acceptable. Telling me that "nobody else is having a problem, so therefore it must be my hardware" is also not acceptable.

Being honest with us goes a long way in keeping the faithful keeping the faith. Just sayin....

Like the others are saying, Thanks Again!

I am still having this problem. Every day I come to work and plug my 2011 15" MBP into my 24-inch Cinema Display and it flickers frequently, really frustrating. It stops flickering after about an hour of use, but then when it has gone to sleep and wakes back up it begins again for a shorter period. It doesn't seem right to sell monitors for $1,000 and then allow issues like this to persist.

I know Apple has issued fixes, that I have applied, but are they still working on this? Cause the problem is still there.
