24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

Eh, we're talking about spending 1000s of £s on a system that is unusable for months, without the seller doing anything. Nothing to do with natural disaters obviously. For those of us making a living by working with Apple products it is however rather significant a disruption.

If comparing it to life and death, then obviosuly, you can't complain about anything, ever.

I'm not going to waste time arguing on what types of words being used (some of us aren't even from an english spoken country).

It's obvious this error affects us quite different.

Some of us use this monitor as a professional (10+ hours a day in productivity) and with up to 30 flashes an hour for 7 months you do the math how annoying this is.

Not taking this aspect, of us having different level of problems, in your "analyse" is not very fair.

I was affected from this and this impacted seriously my productivity. After struggling form many months with Apple I have sold my Apple 24'' (flickering issues every 30 seconds with new 15'' MBP) with Apple Care that "should" ensure me 3 years of professional support... and I have bought a 24'' from another company... so, YES, really the worst professional support I have deal with...

Thank you so much missilemike for this information! I can use my LED Cinema Display without any annoying blinking or horizontal shifts. Well... at least for now. Hope this will keep working and not come back as the other updates did.

For you that missed the information about the solution, here's the link again: http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECARE_ALLGEOS/TS4045/24-inchCinema DisplayFirmwareUpdate.dmg

The update is really easy and fast. Just make sure you have your Cinema Display connected. I use the early MacBook Pro 2011 model.

Thanks again

I paid just under £700 for my 24 inch monitor about 2 years ago and then they go and discontinue it. That's not really a problem to me, but what is a problem is when they do not give a sh** about providing compatiblity. Do they seriously expect us to be throwing away monitor every two years??? How green is that of Apple? So here I am with my 2011 MacBook Pro, that I bought so that I could use it with a thunderbolt raid (that I now own) and then I cannot have a stable display to play it through.

I have been angry angry angry since I bought my new Macbook and then I sense relief when this second fix is released after the first one did absolutely nothing except provide more frustration at a broken promise. Months pass and nothing happens except a more and more poor image of Apple forms in my head. It is a pretty accurate image of arrogance. Then this fix............AND THEN THEY PULL IT.

***...

So now I have to download it from a dodgy site, because Apple pulls the fix and tells you that you have to carry on flickering.

While I love many Apple products, I really do hate Apple sometimes. They just do too much careless stuff to really say they care about customer comfort. Still everybody always looks happy on their website and their shopworkers clap you like loyal robots when you perform so well by buying.

Rant over....

FWIW.......

Been runung about 4 hours of computing time with no blackouts....... (last night and today)

Too early to say totally fixed but so far so good..... I used to get a dozen or more per hour.......

I have held off any OS updates and macbook pro specific EFI etc... updates.......

Any one been brave enough to be fully up to date on a 2011 MBP 15 i7 Snow Leopard 10.6.8???

Why it was pulled is a very good question

Been on this thread for 7 months!! Apples responsiveness and upfrontedness has been pitiful........

I just spoke to a phone support person at Apple, and they told me that the updater only works in certain situations. If you have flicker with your 24 inch display and thunderbolt mac, you should just contact AppleCare.

Yes it's even indicated in the notes that came with the update:

IMPORTANT:

This firmware update may not resolve the flickering issue if a Mini DisplayPort extender cable is used.

Maybe Apple don't want to release it until it works in all situations, including with Mini DIsplayPort extender, as some users with Mac Pros are likely to use such an extender if they put the computer unit under the desk.
