2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive noise.

Hi all.
Just bought a new Macbook Pro and started to make some Hard Drive noise. Like is working (write/read data).
Especially if you open some softwares, like CS5, Nero,...

I have a old 2009 Macbook Pro and never have this kind of sound (or is not so strong). Is very quiet.
My wife have a 13' Macbook Pro and the noise/sound is very low. But with the new 2011 is more prominent.

This is normal? Something to do with the new processors?

Anyone have the same experience?

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Did you order from the Apple store online? I did, and even after taking it to an official Apple Store, getting it repaired and encountering the same problem, they are still replacing it with a brand new one. If you did, call up Apple Care and ask them for a replacement. I don't know how it works in Sweden, but you should have a period within which you're able to ask for your money back. I'd do that, and then order a new one.

The plot thickens for me....

Just received a brand new replacement MBP and it has *exactly* the same problem as the previous one. This makes me wonder if Apple have a bunch of faulty units. My HDDs model is also Toshiba MK7559GSXF.

I've never had a problem with all my Mac's: PowerBook, iMac and MacBook Pro, so I'm really disappointed that this is happening.

MacBook521,

Yes yes, we're probably all familiar with what noise a hard disk makes when reading/writing. However, 1) that's a 3.5" hdd that will make considerably more noise than a 2.5" hdd and 2) the noise I'm hearing periodically is the noise that happens in your video only once.

It's the noise the disk in the video is making when you've turned it on, about 5 seconds in. It's the noise of the head hiting the central cylindar of the disk. It's a noise that shouldn't occur if a hard disk is healthy, but occurs when the head hits a bad/damaged sector. It's the noise that's featured in a whole bunch of helpful YouTube videos. It's the noise that is widely known about and has been termed "the click of death".

That's the noise, not the noise of regular disk operations you're refering to.

I suggest that in future if you've not got anything useful to say that you keep your thoughts to yourself. We're trying to constructivly determine if a drive is faulty or not here. Your comments are not helpful.

As I've previously discussed on these forums, this noise occurs with the SMS turned off and the laptop always in a fixed position on a desk. To have this problem with two brand new MBPs in a row is something I find odd, and which is why we're discussing other possibilities that could cause it. Things like batch of faulty disks, power issues (this same noise can occur commonly on portable HDDs that are not faulty, but are not receiving the required amount of power to operate properly), etc.

But thank you, your comment was at least useful this time.

On a related but lighter note: a friend suggested that maybe the new MBPs are prone to suffering constant nightmares where they are falling.... ;-)

it happens to me too. My late 2009 Macbook was stolen. so i brought mid 2012 13inch Macbook pro as replacement. the hard drive is noticably louder than that of my old macbook, and it starts to make the clicking noise you guys mentioned. i checked the system report. it is made by hitachi, which is the same manufacturer who made the hard drive in my old macbook. but the drive in the Macbook is so quiet, you barely can tell it is using a mechanic hard drive and survive 3 years of intense use without any sign of failing.

what is going on here? they just wake up and decide to drop the standards on their products. did western digital bought the hard drive division of hitachi have anything to do with this? i have several western digital hard drives and they are all loud as f**k.

Dear all

I am experiencing the same issue of many of you: I bought a Mac Book Pro at the end of June 2012. In late september it started to make abothering constant noise, coming from the right front corner. I brought the machine twice to Apple care service. Once they replaced the fan; nothing changes. I returned, they said this time the noise is not originated by the fan but by the hard-drive. They confirmed 2012 Mac Book Pro models are more noisy than previous models, but stiil this level of noise is not acceptebe as an issue by Apple.

I then contacted Apple directly and opened a claim; finally, they are offering me to change the hard-drive of my Mac. Now I have an Hitachi, which brand should be less noisy? If I followed correctly the previous post, it's not really an issue of brand, but of luck. Toshiba sometimes is better other times makes the same noise..

I'm also wonder if it can't be even worse, as so far I did not experienced the regular click noise, maybe it could start with a different hard drive!

I'm very very disappointed with the product, I can't believe that Aplle can develop products that are more noisy than previous ones.

Thanks for any advice on the issue
