Can receive email, yet cannot send it

Hi and thanks in advance if anyone has any help for me. I am having some serious issues with Mac Mail. My PB is newer (bought within the year) and I am running the newest OS. I have a web host which also provides my email (ipowerweb.com) and I have a DSL connection with Verizon Online (netservices.verizon.net).

I am perfectly able to receive emails, no problem there. When I go to send an email however this msg comes up:

"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail Preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator."

Using the disscussion boards I have done the following to try and solve the situation:

• Created a new account with a new email -- still get the error msg.

• Changed my outgoing server settings to 456 or other numbers different than 25.

I am getting pretty frustrated... I have NEVER had any type of problem like this with any Mac and I work on them all day. I tried looking on both my host's and internet provider's sites for answers, but came up pretty dry. I am not positive, but I think this issue has to do with the last update of the OS. However, I have had the same problem before, but usually is went away after a restart, or fussing with the preferences. It has been three weeks, and I am dying to know what the heck is going on.

Also, would anyone know if help can be found at an Apple Retail store? I have one close by and was thinking of stopping by to see if they have any advice.

THANK YOU.
Sarah

I copied the following from Verizon's website.

The outgoing (SMTP) server should be set to outgoing.verizon.net. If this server address is correct, verify that your @verizon.net address is configured as your From address.

Based on this, Verizon may not allow using their SMTP server to send mail with an email account not provided by Verizon or that doesn't have an @verizon.net address configured as your From address so you need to contact Verizon for instructions on using an email account and/or SMTP server that is not provided by Verizon or is out of their network.

I have just run into the problem of being able to receive mail through .MAC but cannot send it. I'm on vacation at my parent's place and using their Road Runner connection (Tampa, Fl.) A LinkSys router in their home network failed a few days ago and rather than replace it, I changed the network configuration to use an Airport Extreme to feed both the wireless network and an iMac that plugs directly into the ethernet port of the Airport base. The airport is configured to share a single IP address. Connecting through the Airport, I'm unable to send using Apples .Mac SMTP server. My father is able to send using Road Runner's SMTP. This make it appear that Road Runner is blocking SMTP. I tried changing the port to 587 with no luck. Next I tried directly connecting to the Road Runner modem without going through the Airport base and I'm able to send to .Mac SMTP.

The problem is some how related to the Airport base, but I'm at a lose to explain it. I'm going to continue to experiment with different network settings to see what happens. If I come up with anything more I'll post it to the group.

Same problem since moving from OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.3. Settings are exactly the same from one OS to another (I have 10.3.9 running on an external HD and mail works fine there) I’m connected to Internet via Cable (Optimum OnLine). Able to receive, compose, attach, but not Send or Forward. Connection Doctor confirms internet connection to ISP servers. Most times attempts to send result in message showing up in Drafts folder. Using Gmail and Yahoo Mail as a substitute but they require browser to be running, whereas Apple Mail is simply available from the Dock with no Browser. I welcome anyone with ideas to correct this problem?

I am having this same problem. I can receive mail using Mail, but I cannot send messages using Mail. I think that it as been this way for quite some time, but I have ignored it because Eudora works fine. My brother just got a new iMac (on my suggestion) and I was trying to get him up an running and he can't sent messages using Mail either even though it receives fine. It has to be something with Mail and not the ISP.

I was having a variation of the problem everyone's been having and I managed to find a solution which certainly won't work for everyone but here's how it worked out for me:

I have an e-mail account from Network Solutions, my domain service (not my webhost, though). I tried to set up Mail the way they suggested, entering "mail.mydomain.com" and my user name and pass from Network solutions in the "incoming" field and using the pulldown menu to set the SMTP as "outgoing.verizon.net." I found I could receive mail but not send it, getting instead many of the same error messages quoted above.

Following the cue of the Verizon support quoted earlier I concluded that Verizon would not accept the non-Verizon domain I entered for incoming mail. I went back to Network Solutions and changed my e-mail settings to forward to my Verizon account but that still didn't seem to fix it.

Finally, on a hunch, I went into the Mail preferences and clicked on the "server settings" button. It was set to server port "25" and the authentication button was set to "none" so I changed that to "password" and entered my Verizon user name and password--voila, everything seems to work now.

Which is to say, I am now set up in Mail with Verizon settings and getting my mail forwarded to Verizon from my other e-mail address. I hope that helps someone.
