Is it my graphics card that is causing the crash / freezing?

During the last week my computer has been freezing. Nothing changes on the screen but keyboard mouse unresponsive. If listening to music it makes a horrible sound when it crashes. Below are the 3 kernel reports i collected. They seem to point to the graphics card but i'm not an expert. I have about a month left on my warranty - be great if anyone could suggest what i should do.

Thanks in advance.

I think I just need to go to a different store because I've shown them all of these logs.

I have now started taking screenshots of all of them because apparently the computer deletes them after a while, but when I went in recently I had like 6 that had happend in the span of 36 hours to show them; and they saw them. If you read my earlier post you'll see that they just said it was a "flash problem," downloaded a flash update and actually had the nerve to tell me to stay off of flash websites.

But I really think this might just be the store, because when I came in 6 months ago I didn't have all the log evidence and they told me it was my OS and that they couldn't do anything for me. They didn't so much as glance at the logs. It really seems like this one store just tries to do everything possible in order to avoid servicing my computer.

This goes against A LOT of what I've heard about apple stores.. I can't tell you how many people have told me they love their apple store because of how they go out of their way to fix problems. I mean a couple posts above this one dude got a new computer! ALL I WANT IS FOR THIS ONE TO WORK!! User uploaded file

So tomorrow I'm taking a road trip to another store.. Pray for me lol.

Well, my case is quite special.

As I suffered more than 13 Macbook Pro repairs, and I spent a lot of money and time going to the Apple Store, the Apple Care service changed my old Macbook Pro (MBP C2D 2.8GHz) by the new ones (MBP i7 2.66GHz).

Once I received the new MBP i7 2.66 GHz, I noticed in the first day that problem posted before and due that, Apple will change my Macbook Pro again.

I hope really you can solve your problem.

@panda - I've got a growing stack of kernel panics that look just like yours. Always in WindowServer or kernel_task, with Read Error 0x00000100 and plenty of pointers to the graphics system.

I went in to the Apple store this weekend and the "genius" also told me to uninstall Flash. Sheesh. He insisted it's a software problem and that a fix is on the way. If it's a software problem, it's in the OSX graphics drivers, not in flash.

Ive been reading all of the issues, I have though when starting in Safe Mode been able to open all my programs and use a second monitor, but when I boot normal it crashes,

If it works in Safe mode? Is there something im missing? Is there a driver somewhere causing this I have Apple Care and wanted to know if its something else from your guys opinion?

I downloaded this program and it cleaned my mac, it also seemed to fix some permissions and also find some program issues.

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx

It seems to be working ive got a ton of video hog programs im using and its working so this might be corrupt programs.

Make a new account and test or recreate the kernal panic, I couldnt thats why I came to the conclusion it was a software issue somewhere.

Apr 28, 2011 3:01 AM in response to Ritcho

Hey guys,

I've been having the same issue as the OP, and it's driving me nuts. I was only able to find this thread on google after copy pasting a section of my own kernel panic reports.

Basically, I have regular kernel panics related to my graphics driver, and everything I try has done nothing to fix the issue. I even went into the Apple store twice only to be told there's nothing wrong with my mac. They said that even after an extensive diagnostics test.

Then the guy at the bar told me, because there's nothing wrong with the hardware, it's a software issue and we can't cover for anything that's not Apple. Oh for heavens sake, I gave him my **** macbook in a clean install state. Anything non Apple approved includes websites etc.

Unfortunately I live in Sydney, so that is the only accessible Apple store for me. How on earth can I solve this problem?

Here are a few panic logs, for my MacBook Pro mid 2010 i5 2.4GHz fully updated.

May 5, 2011 1:22 PM in response to WhoaTony

I have exactly the same issue as you. My MBP has been crashing for more than two months now. I thought originally that it was related to my external monitor. Then I thought it was a program called Path Finder. Today it crashed when using iPhoto. That's an Apple Software, no?

I ran the entire diagnosis tools and there's no hardware problem with my computer, but I can't seem to isolate the problem if it's software. Anyway, here is my latest crash log.

I had similar issues.

From what I can tell, "NVRM read error" is related to Graphics card virtual memory.

I think Apple had issues with the chips supplied by NVIDIA. Possibly part of the reason they have switched to ATI now.

Mine is a Nvidia Geforce 330M in a macbook pro i7 from mid 2010. It seems this issue is concentrated around mid 2010.

None of the hardware tests on the OSX cd were able to detect it. Non of the hardware tests run by apple service were able to detect it. It was finally solved with a logic board replacement, as it was for many others who have had this problem.

Because they cant identify the problem with their hardware tests this issue can be a nightmare since they tend to blame a "3rd party software incompatibility" for the issue and send you home. In my case I was able to demonstrate that (on a clean install of OSX) various very common games running off steam would crash after a few minutes without fail. I was also able to show that others running with the same system could run the same games without problems.

Good luck.

It's been happening for a while now and after putting up with it I decided it was becoming just to unstable and dropped it into the closest apple service store. Interesting thing is that my warranty expired 7 days ago, so this case could get quite interesting. Thankfully the panic logs go back to when it was still in warranty and I am certainly crossing my fingers for a positive outcome.

Will let everyone know the outcome as soon as I do!

Cheers

My MBP is getting a new motherboard. Should be ready today or tomorrow. Brought it to the Apple Store on Tuesday. The guy at the counter didn't even argue. He said they had the replacement board in stock and should take no longer than 72 hours.

I'm hoping it will fix my issues.

BTW, normally in the "13th" month of purchase, Apple usually offers to repair a computer under warranty if you agree to purchase the AppleCare associated to your machine. It happened to me a few times before (I'm a customer since 1989) and always had a good outcome.

I strongly recommend to anyone owners of a laptop to get the AppleCare. My experience shows it's usually worth it.

Sébastien

Well, just got my Macbook pro back today after having the logic board replaced. Happy to say that everything is working well and it appears to be stable once again.

As for the warranty, after a phone call with the apple representative it was completely covered. No complaints with that at all! Thank you Apple.

Good luck to everyone else experiencing this problem, hope you come right!

Regards

Greg

Is it my graphics card that is causing the crash / freezing?
