To Benny2008 - no! This erases only files which are visible in VLC. However there is small trick for iTunes, see: iOS: About File Sharing ht4094.
Problem for VLC (currently today version) is, you can't add directories. It could consume only files. Directories and files there are simply invisible!
So you can't use your recommended steps.
Open VLC on your iPad then click edit top right corner then click the blang circle top left corner of the movie window then click the garbage can bottom right corner. Voila!
