MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

Hi Mike,

That is not confirmed,
I still have the crashes when that is unticked.
The only way for me to avoid the crash is by forcing the laptop to use the Intel Onboard Graphics.

I have exactly the same problem. MacBook pro 15 inch early 2011 basic model with upgraded HDD to 7200 rpm.

This sounds like the CPU is overheating and can be explained by this picture as to why:

Your only bet would be to reinstall Mac OS X with the original disc or the Snow Leopard retail disc (whichever you have that is OS X Snow Leopard).

Got yesterday 15 inch, Ci7 2.2, 8 GB RAM, 10.6.6
same problems: Freeze @ Starcraft 2, VM Ware Fusion, heavy SQL load...

Run the Cinebench GPU test with 8 instances of yes > /dev/null running at the same time.

Since my initial post, I have not had a repeat freeze. I'm going to leave the question unanswered for awhile in order to help those who seem to be having the same problem.

Well i can run 8 instances of the > yes /dev/null command to max all 8 cores and my macbook Pro 2.2Ghz 8Gb RAM with 128 Apple SSD doesnt break a sweat.

It hovers at 4500 RPMs with a 78°C temp.
