MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze

Overheat? The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.

Just a little disillusioned and concerned, wondering if anyone else there has experienced a hard freeze like this.

I removed my Crucial M4 from this laptop to use in a new laptop I got (the 17" MBP 2011 shutdowns became unbearable), and I put the original HDD back in it, to try and restore Mavericks to it via USB, and the video card freaked out so much that it made the screen look like a static-filled TV station, until it completely shut down. Every. Single. Time.

So I can't even restore OSX to another drive, the video card is so botched. This makes me so upset.

You are right Side_Step_Society. Thanks for the more accurate info. I'd like to think Apple has realized an extra BGA for GPU might not be worth the risk.

EEaudio88, you are also right. It isn't the RAM or HDD, I tried swapping those. You can see my pain filled thread here with pictures of snow like you said. I was using another computer to keep doing disk repairs and had another disk with OS X installed that I'd cyclically swap. The problems recur, and also seem to corrupt the disk. This wasn't a problem I could fix myself with different RAM and HDDs. On the first repair the Depot Repair put 4GB RAM back in. And I never used any other RAM on the 2nd replaced logic board. That one destroyed itself within a day. If I were to guess something external to the board, I'd think power supply or case. However, the case looks very well designed. Someone on the MBP 2011 Facebook page guessed LCD cable. These are all things better to be made Apple's problem by taking it to an Apple Store Genius. Re: i7 MBP 8.2 AMD 6750M 2011 Crashes, Red Horizontal Lines, won't boots

After 3 logic boards from depot repair, my MBP 2011 has been working for a year with 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, and new power supply I bought a year ago. Just got a new battery last week.

I hope you backed up. The crashes and heat can't be good for disks. You will probably have to use the Disk Utility to repair the disk. If the $310 depot repair seems better about now, take it to the AS genius. A cheaper MB Air to keep you working might be cheaper than a therapist. Good luck!

Otro Mac Book "PRO" afectado.

Another affected MBP 2011 15". 😟 3 years old and...die!

Diagnosis: graphics card and maybe 'northbridge' kaput.

It's amazing that more than 2000 euros machines like these are taking this **** lifespan. With Domestic use. Only boots in safe mode. No other solution found among the many raised by myself, by applecare (I opened a couple of exceptions) or technical services. I hope APPLE deign to open a free repair program, because it is not normal to existis thousands of affected machines.

THANK YOU Saramwrap, Hnrk and others!! 🙂

After going through this entire post/skimming a good bit of it and seeing the available additional options, I'm going to go with the disable option. I'm on my #2 logic board [repaired in mid 2012]. I have been forced back to running the gfxcardstatus software. I had to boot 5 times yesterday and quickly navigated to the software before it had a chance to freeze. While this temporary solution will be in effect, I will begin investing in a custom PC [which will be more powerful and still cheaper! Been a nice-ish run with Apple, but I'll refrain from getting other products for a very long time].

Also, when I did the kextstat in command, I only saw 'ATI6000Controller' & 'ATISupport'. I take it i'll have to disable the 'ATI6000Controller.kext' file? I'll give it a shot and hopefully that solves things for now. For those currently repeating the same inquiries, go through the thread. Page 130 is a good place to start.

Good luck! 😉

I'm another victim of same failure. It happened last week. It kinda works for a while if I only use it for browsing web and some basic work, with smcFanControl running 100% rpm all the time. I did contact my local Premium Reseller to acknowledge the issue and pass it to apple. I will, as the procedure goes, contact official apple support, but I doubt they will deliver any permanent solution.

Add me to the list.

It started with maverick. Color would change when switching from one user to another.

Fans always full speed.

That was 5 or 6 months ago.

Then 2 days ago, blue screen. then distortion, im struggling to turn it on every time, sometime after 2 hours of restarting, safe or repair mode.

Im suing gfxCradStatus but it doesnt help me much, cause as soon as the computer is off, when i start it, it goes back to the discrete card, all over again.

My 2011 MBP 17" had been working fine until last weekend. Started with the "hard freeze" - mouse pointer just stopped moving on wake from sleep not doing much. Then problems with booting locking up on blue screen from internal/bootcamp/external drive. Seemed to recover enough after SMC reset and zap PRAM to behave normally at least for a while.

Apple Hardware Test not working at all on my machine (refurb shipped with Lion installed). Did boot succesfully once trying to run AHT (hold "D" during boot).

Genius confirms Video System Test failure (message says "see TP585 in GSX") and my machine is eligible for the warranty extension program.

So this is the really big thread:2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
